1.Plastics
1.1 Origin and transformation of plastics
Synthhetic plastics: are made from compounds extracted from
petroleum, natural gas and carbon.
The transformation of these raw matenals and compounds into plastics is called polymerisation.
Natural plastics: are obtained directly from raw vegetable materials.
1.2 Properties of plastics
Acoustic: acoustic insulation.
Electrical: electrical insulation.
Mechanical: malleabrlity, ductility, mechanical resrstance.
Thermal: thermal insulation.
Other properties: low density, impermeabihty.
1.3 Ecological properties
Energetic recycling: we can incinerate plastics and the energy that
is produced is used tn industry.
Mechanical recycling: we make new products from plastic
granules.
Chemical recycling: we apply chemical processes to make new
materials.
2.Classification of plastics
2.1 Thermoplastics
When we heat them, they become soft and flexible, wich allows them to be formed into diferent shapes.
2.2 Thermostable plastics
Whem they are heated they become soft and can be moulded, but when cooled, they cant be reshaped.
2.3 Elastomers
They are hard, resistant and very elastic, stretching easily under
force.
