Do’s and don’t s during Chinese New Year
Donts
Can’t wash or cut our hair during the first day.
We can’t curse or said any unlucky words like death on the first day.
We aren’t allowed to wear black for the first 3 days of cny.
Can’t throw the garbage out on the first day.
Cleaning of any kind is strictly forbidden on the first day.
Do’s
Cleaning the house from top to bottom before the span of midnight.
We always wear red on the first day.
Setting off fireworks to scare off evil spirits.
We prepared oranges and tangerines to put around the house.
Always keep an even number amount of money in your wallet.
Food
We will always have steamed fish on the table.
Changshou mian (longevity noodles) because the noodles are really long it represents long life.
Nian gao (Chinese rice cake) my mom would always fry them with egg and eat it.
Yee Sang (prosperity toss) it is believed to bring good luck, happiness and prosperity. It usually involves raw fish, vegetables and small crackers.
Abalone is one of the most important food during cny, people even give abalone as gifts to one another.
Activities
We go from houses to houses to visit our friends and family.
On the first day, we must greet our family members with some Chinese new year verses to get our red packet.
We like to gamble small amounts of money during Chinese new year.
We will invite lion dance troupe to come over our house to bring in luck.
