Felix and Zelda start to lose hope, as they now know the Nazis are out to get them. When they do get caught, their friendship falls apart, since they get split. Felix and Zelda are both trying to be resilient, but it is difficult for both of them. It states in the text that Zelda is "howling in fright." Felix tries to make a story, to make the Nazi not want to separate them, but he is unable to think of a story. This shows how protective Felix is of Zelda, that he tries to do anything to help her. This is also an example of imagination.
