Basic Chemistry
Atoms - Made up of protons(+), neutrons(no charge), and electrons(-)
Types of bonds
Ionic Bonds - Formed when one atom loses an electron while it's partner atom gains that electron. The atoms then become ions
Covalent Bonds - Formed when atoms share electrons. This type of bond can make some molecules polar, making one side slightly more negative or positive than the other.
Hydrogen Bonds - Formed when oppositely charged sides of different molecules attract and form a bond together.
-
Polarity - The property of molecules that have a partial negative side and a partial positive side. This means that the oppositely charged sides of different molecules will attract.
Lipids/Fat - Molecules that have both a polar and non-polar end. This makes them great options to be used for cell membranes and makes one of their sides unable to form hydrogen bonds.
