ESS 113 James Palco Presentation
Converting and Storing Energy
Cheapest forms of energy: Solar and Wind (also hydroelectric maybe)
A hair drier can take 1.5 kilo-watts in an hour
Solar + Utility scale (ptc) is as low as $0
Wind Onshore (ptc) is also as low as $0
Burning gas is currently the most used medium to make energy
Renewable it 2nd and steadily increasing, but not as fast as gas
Natural Gas is first because we have gotten very good at fracking
Natural gas is also very reliable since they can be used 24/7 where solar and wind is not always going on
Natural gas is mostly methane
Used in burning steam to move turbine engines
California ISO handles energy generation in ... California
Also shows stats for what cali uses (per day)
How do you over come shortcomings in renewables?
Storage
Reverse hydro plants
Alter work schedules
Shift demand loads
Reduce Demand
Trade power
Could cause issues with environment due to the required increase in construction across long distances
How to generate heat?
Combustion
Resistance/Induction
Heat pump
