Who are the pioneers of my field?
Florence Nightingale
Greatest Accomplishment- In 1860, she established the first professional training school for nurses, the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas' Hospital.
she transformed nursing into a respectable profession for women.
Difficult Challenge- Her challenge was to raise the status of the old-style nursing from that of a domestic servant to a junior professional.
Clara Barton
Greatest Accomplishment- May 21, 1881 ,she founded the American Red Cross.
she had her first medical experience at the age 11 when her older brother fell off a barn roof. For nearly 2 years she remained at his bedside, applying leeches and dispensing medication. He made a full recovery from serious cranial trauma.
Difficult Challenge- Her challenge was not having any medical training that became prominent when helping soldiers on the battlefield. She got through it because she continuously remembered what she believed in.
Margaret Sanger
Greatest Accomplishment - She launched the Birth Control Review in 1917 and founded the American Birth Control League in 1921 to gain support from social workers, medical professionals and the public for birth control.
Difficult Challenge- Her challenge was trying to legalize birth control and make it universally available for women.
Mary Seacole
Greatest Accomplishment- She rode horseback into the battlefields, even when under fire, to nurse wounded men from both sides of the war,
Difficult Challenge- She faced unfairness and discrimination as a black women when she tried to volunteer as a nurse during the Crimean War (1854-1856).
