Democracy For Any Society
Local Politics and Democratic State-Building - Myerson
Democracy can be instituted in any nation but, the installation of it should be worked with the people at the local level
Leaders of national and local government need to be on the same page. This will strengthen democratic competition
This articles would be an effective one to use to strengthen my argument. Basically, this article suggests the best ways to go about transitioning a government from non-democratic such as Authoritarian to Democratic. The way to do it effectively is to involve people at all different levels and divide the power
The Imperative of State-Building
In democracy, there is still a sense of staleness in which "enforcement" exists. Police are an example of such in America
Usually in a Democracy, there is still a sense of hierarchy in that states should provide one level of defense and governing and this should increase at the national level
This would help in my argument in that changes may not really be as extreme as some people in China may think. You can still have a centralized government that uses "enforcement" such as police but does not infringe on human and political rights nearly as much if at all
Democracy and the Quality of the State
"The existence of an effective bureaucracy in the present depends on the historical sequence in which state modernization was undertaken relative to the opening up of the franchise to broader democratic participation".
The timing of an attempt to move toward democracy and the Leadership responsible for the shift will directly impact the success of the transition
This could kind of be a counter-argument for my claim. Because there is not really a history of democracy in China, it is not exactly known the best way to go about and how to time an intervention that would push the government toward democracy.
Three Paradozes of Democracy
The paradox as explained by the text is: "Democracy requires consent. Consent requires legitimacy. legitimacy requires effective performance. But effectiveness may be sacrificed to consent".
Democracy as a Universal Value
Outbreaks such as famines are easier to prevent in a society ruled by a democracy where the people can vote to change leaders and polices
All cultures can host a democracy, it is not an exclusive form of government.
This is primarily where my topic falls because Democracy is not a value that is exclusive to any culture or religion, but fit for any society. This counteracts many of the arguments that have halted a move toward democracy in China.
What Democracy Is and Is Not
There are many different types of democracy with many different results
Cooperation is a key factor of a successful democracy. People must cooperate to reach any achievements.
Religion, Democracy, And the "Twin Tolerations
The separation of church and state is believed to be imperative to the success of a democracy
From Liberalism to Liberal Democracy
Every person has the right to one vote and all votes should be treated equal
men must be equal in a society to achieve a true democracy that opperates effectively
This would support my argument that China should push toward a Democracy because it would make the people more equal in that they would all in theory have an "equal" say in their politics.
Democracy and Liberty
There is a difference between "electoral democracies" and "Liberal democracies" in their respect for human rights.
Corruption: Diagnosis and Treatment
Anticorruption efforts exert great funds but accomplish little
Corruption is often used as a tool to get people who have less of a voice to, more voice in their society.
Transitions To The Rule of Law
The rule of law is something that individuals in a democratic society accept and abide by in order to achieve a balanced society. If leaders in non democratic societies also operated in this manner, it would make the life of the citizens and a potential transtion to democracy a lot simpler
Seperation of Church and state is not necessarily a requirement.
Why The Rule of Law Matters
The legal system is a hierarchy in which the people follow the rules established and enforced by the highest powers
"legally based rule of a democratic state"
Rethinking Civil Society Toward Democratic Consolidation
Civil Society is an imessearuable factor important in the functioning of a Democratic government and nation. It encompasses pluralism and diversity.
Civil Society is especially strong for a democracy "When it generates opportunities for participation and influence at all levels of governance".
Rethinking Civil Society Pluralism In The Arab World
Civil Society serves as a "check on the power" of certain people and organizations and better disperses power in a society.
Argues that Civil Society is of overwhelming importance in developing democracies because a rushed and not coherent transition to democracy in a nation with little to no history of the practice will not be able to survive and prosper under a democracy
Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital
"The greater the density of associational membership in a society, the more trusting its citizens. Trust and engagement are two facets of the same underlying factor-social capital".
Civic Engagement is imperative in a society that intends to work with each other to create the best and most fluent democracy possible
