THE SOLAR SYSTEM
IMPORTANT PEOPLE
Aristarchus of Samoswas an Ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician. He was the first to suggest that Earth orbits the Sun.
he based it on a personal prefernce with fire
Ptolemy was a Greek-Roman astronomer and mathematician. He proposed that Earth was a fixed point in space, that Earth was a fixed point in space where the Sun and all the planets moved around.
Ptolemy really tried to prove his theories. He used maths to predict the movements of the planets and he described how a geocentric universe might actually work. It was all very complicated and seems to be accurate… at least, without a telescope, which hadn’t been invented back then
in the end his theory was quite famous for a thousand yers, but then it was easally disproven
Nicolaus Copernicus was a polish astronomer. He was obsessed with astronomy and he even built his own observatory. In his day, most people still believed Ptolemy’s geocentric theory, but Copernicus wasn’t convinced.

Wang Zhenyi was born in China at a time when girls didn’t learn alongside boys. That didn’t stop her. She educated herself and became a skilled astronomer. In her time, many people believed wild stories about things that happened in outer space.
Some thought an eclipse meant a dragon had eaten the sun. Wang Zhenyi wasn’t one of them. She was into facts and science and she created a model to simulate and explain solar eclipse (where the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun) and lunar eclipse (where Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon).
