Common findings
Women who suffer from PCOS produce excessive men sex hormones, a condition called hyperandrogenism; having this conditon leads to excessive body hair and acne. Hyperandrogenism also prevents normal release of egg cells from the ovaries, leading to difficulty with conceiving children.
PCOS can also cause irregular or missed menstrual periods, development of cysts on the ovaries
diagnostic test
Ultrasound- an ultrasound is used to determine the size of the ovaries and to see if there are any cysts present. It can also be used to determine the thickness of the lining of the uterus (endometrium)
A blood test can be used to determine its there are high levels of androgens
causative Factors
Insulin resistance- excessive produce of insulin can cause women to produce the male hormone :
androgen, leading to issues with ovulation
Low-inflammation- women with PCOS have a long term low grade inflammation, this leads to polycystic ovaries to produce androgens.
Heredity- having a family history of PCOS can play a role in developing the condition
