Effects of A Lack of Education - Coggle Diagram
Effects of A Lack of Education
Mental
Low education is linked to
lack of sense of control
The individual tends to experience
more everyday stressors
than their educated peers
"These negative factors have been strongly correlated with the onset of depression."
(Williams, 2023)
"An extra year of education led to a lower likelihood of reporting any symptoms related to depression (11.3%) and anxiety (9.8%). More educated people also suffered less severe symptoms - depression (6.1%) and anxiety (5.6%)."
(Kondirolli, Sunder, 2022)
Less likely to trust themselves or their decisions resulting in less options
Trauma Cycles are more likely to continue with a lack of education
Socioeconomic
"Poverty affects a child’s brain development, inhibiting their ability to learn and understand"
(Bradley, 2022)
Poor quality education creates an achievement gap (when a group of students do way better than others) which in turn creates a socioeconomic status academic achievement gap
"Only 2 states, New Mexico and Tennessee, showed significant decreases in the SES achievement gap"
(Bradley, 2022)
"In February 2022, the unemployment rate for people 25 years and older who were high school graduates with no college was 4.5 percent. Those with less than a high school diploma had a similar unemployment rate, 4.3 percent. The unemployment rate for people with some college or associate degree was 3.8 percent. Those with a bachelor’s degree or higher had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.2 percent."
(US Labor Bureau of Statistics, 2022)
Families with common drop outs are risks for continuing cycles of poverty
Poverty effects mental, emotional and physical well being and development-- meaning
low income kids have a harder time learning
" A working paper published by the American Research Institutes reported that 34 of the 50 states showed no statistically significant change in the SES achievement gap from 2003 to 2017"
(Bradley, 2022)
Inequalities
Gender Inequality
"Over 130 million young women around the world are not currently enrolled in school. One in 3 girls in the developing world marries before the age of 18, and usually leaves school if they do."(Rueckert, 2019)
"Black and White women would need at least one additional education degree
to earn as much as less-educated men"
(Bisesti, García, 2022)
"Latinx women need two additional degrees to earn as much as less educated
Latinx men"
(Bisesti, Garcia, 2022)
Disability Exclusion
"being denied access to school is common for the world’s 93 to 150 million children with disabilities. In some of the world’s poorest countries, up to 95% of children with disabilities are out of school." ( Rueckert, 2019)
Special Education
has only been around for the last two decades or so. There are countless court cases from the early 1800 to even later 1900s that exclude these children for various reasons. As part of our society, they too deserve a quality education
Unequal access to representation due to Inequalities
Menstrual Cycles
There are many countries without proper toilets for their students, but there are also a lot of females that due to poverty have no access to menstrual care supplies so they are forced to miss school.
Women of Color
often worry about whether their children will receive the same education as children not of color
Women of Color
"About 21 percent of Black women cite lack of educational opportunities as a key hurdle to economic success, and more than a quarter of Black women with college degrees believe so" (McMurdock, 2021)
Unequal access to Literacy through Inequalities
Extreme Risks
Human Trafficking
Schools provide our youth with a safe space during the day. Without quality education providing proper teachers and buildings, the youth is more likely to be in vulnerable situations like these. Sometimes these children and/or their adults feel like this is the only option to solve their financial issue due to lack of education.
Child Marriage
In many countries child marriages are very much still a thing. The parents feel that their daughters will have a better opportunity with marrying than an education
Incarceration
"High school dropouts are 3.5 times more likely than high school graduates to be arrested in their lifetime.
High school dropouts are 63% more likely to be incarcerated than their peers with four-year college degrees." (JV,2022)
Substance Abuse
"Dropouts that are between the ages of 16 and 18 are more than twice as likely to use cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, and other illicit drugs. Overall, more than 30 percent of students who dropped out of high school use drugs compared to 18 percent of those who stay in school" (Michael House Treatment Centers, n.d.)

Health Risks
Leads to poor health
which causes a shift in increase in health care costs with more visits to doctors
Shorter Life Span
"1990 and 2008, the life expectancy gap between the most and least educated Americans grew from 13 to 14 years among males and from 8 to 10 years among females" (Center on Society and Health, 2015)
More likely to smoke
"By 2011, smoking was reported by 27 percent of people without a high school diploma or GED but by only 8 percent of those with a Bachelor’s degree" ( Center on Society and Health, 2015)
Video: Education: It Matters More to Health Than Ever Before
Video: Why Education Matters to Health: Exploring the Causes
"By 2011, the prevalence of diabetes had reached 15 percent for adults without a high school education, compared with 7 percent for college graduates"
(Center on Society and Health, 2015)
Less productive at work and life in general
This creates the physical challenge where our bodies start to be on the decline from less interactions/movements
