The Land Lady

Suspense
On page 1 the author wrote "He was in the act of stepping back and turning away from the window when all at once his eye was caught and held in the most peculiar manner by the small notice that was there; compelling him, forcing him to stay where he was and not walk away from that house. This shows that the landlady has power over Billy.
** While searching for a place to stay for the night, he passes numerous decaying streets. “But now, even in the darkness, he could see that the paint was peeling from the woodwork on their doors and windows, and that the handsome white façades were cracked and blotchy from neglect.” Billy describes these buildings in a way that makes the feeling of suspense increase.
There wasn’t a blemish on his body.” “A what?” Billy said. “His skin was just like a baby’s.” There was a pause. In this part of the story, you could infer that Billy was feeling a strange aura from the landlady from what she said. The fact that the author added "There was a pause." adds more suspense.
Something that adds suspense to this story is that nothing "evil" is outright said or done; the author just shows subtle hints to what might be impending.
“And the next thing he knew, he was actually moving across from the window to the front door of the house, climbing the steps that led up to it, and reaching for the bell.” Without having any control of his movements, Billy Weaver rung the bell of the Landlady’s bed and breakfast. We can infer that something is trying to make him stay at this bed and breakfast, and the most obvious assumption would be the Landlady.
