Media's Misinformation Mistrust in Latin America
Elections
Politician campaigns
Politicians use the media as a way to reach out to their supporters and convince others to vote for them as well
Voters influence
the media pushes voters to use their freedom of speech by expressing who to vote for. Some use the media to talk down upon beliefs they don't agree with.
AI generated objects online
Tiktok
This platform is big for it's followers nationwide. By producing fake and untrustworthy information, it becomes easier for individuals to believe it's true because of the platform itself.
Sterotyping
the media portrays a false vision of what Latin Americans should look like. By using AI, they indulge in a very underdeveloped system that hasn't been factually checked. Companies like "Barbie" show what it's like to spread misinformation about a country stereotype that isn't accurate.
China's online campaign in Latin America
Fake News
Some countries use false information to get other countries attention. In this case China spread misinformation in order to promote Beijing's interest in operations to shape the opinion about China.
Bolstering Chinas status
China's strategy was to bring up the countries status as a top regional ally and trading partner. They intended to create positive narratives about China to aid their policy and diplomatic efforts. In order to spread this information they used Twitter to help. Twitter then ended up blocking any label that was marked "China state-affiliated media" from it's feed.
Advertisements and Messaging Systems
Whatsapp
This app has been used in Latin America to get random individuals attention to vote. Bots will mass direct message individuals to click on their link that shows information on the politician for the upcoming election. Whatsapp makes it difficult to block these bots or make a report. This app makes it easier for politicians to directly contact people without having to get their attention outside of the media.
Facebook
This platform is known for it's campaign advertisements during election year. Politicians use Facebook as a way to get through to older citizens who use the app. They are more likely to vote so they are the targeted generation. These advertisements can include backlashing on other candidates or a short video of their campaign.
