Benito Juárez
In 1858, Benito Juárez become the new president of Mexico
That same year a civil war between the Liberals and the conservatives, this war was called "The war of Reform"
During 3 years the Mexican country suffer a very violent and complicated situation, letting the country in a very weak status.
Extra: During his time as president Benito created the reform laws, with make the church lost land and property, with this the goverment cut the power and influence of the church
The french
The poor and weak status after the war of reform left Mexico with limited resources, this caused that Mexico stop paying their debts to Spain, England and France
This caused the europeans countries to arrived in Mexico looking for them to pay.
This put Mexico in a difficult situation, fortunately after the "Tratado de Soledad" that Mexico offer to the europeans Spain and England leave the country, but France stay.
The French took advantage that U.S.A was in a war and couldn't help the LIberals, the French troops landed in Veracruz in 1861 and go direct to the capital.
In May 5 1862 the Mexicans defeated the French in the "Batalla de Puebla", but the French didn't stop and time later the Liberals Troops were destroyed and France take control of the capital.
After the Army Invasion
Archeduke Maximillian of Hasburg was proclaimed the emperor of Mexico, after the French leave the country Maximillian couldn't fight the Liberals and he lose, finally he was executed in 1867 and Benito Juárez returned to the power until his death in 1872.
In 1877 Porfirio Díaz started the "Porfiriato" a 30 years long reing as president, during this period the economy grew, also the agriculture and the mining commerce get bigger, with the porfiriato give us the new railways, telephone networks and banks.
Although Porfirio Díaz brought many benefits, he was a dictator and abuse of the power he had, during this 30 years the majority of the Mexicans remained poor.
The Revolution
After the exile of Porfirio Díaz to France, Fransisco I. Madero won the elections and become the new president,
but this doesn't last to much and after a coup, Victoriano Huerta took over as president and executed Fransisco
The revolutionaries Fransisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata began a struggle to overthrow the President huerta, after a few years Venustiano Carranza assumed the power.
The constitution of 1917
Under Carranza's presidency a new Constitution was adopted in 1917. The new Constitution took into account individual and social rights,particularly to protect the workers and the peasants, and was very nationalistic.
