Causes of Gender Inequality
Societal Expectations
The language used within society contributes to the idea that women are not equal (i.e. Mankind vs. Humankind).
Women are forced into the domestic role within the household, shouldering emotional, physical, and mental labor rather than an equal share and partnership.
Women are perceived in society to be the nurturer, and expected to be submissive to men in a variety of cultures.
Misogynists use societal beliefs around gender inequality to justify inappropriate and hateful behavior/actions towards women.
Females that are apart of the LGBTQIA community and navigating their gender identity and expression face discrimination and hate.
Throughout history, women have been labeled and boxed into gender norms and stereotypes based on the male gaze.
Lack of Legal Protection
20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner, with 1 in 3 women experiencing some sort of physical violence from a partner within their lifetime.
Over half of women (1 in 2) have experienced sexual violence within their lifetime, 2 out of 3 remaining unreported.
To end child marriage--which robs girls of their childhood--the rate of change must increase by 17 times.
7 in 10 human trafficking victims are female, with over 20 million people being trafficked world wide.
Over 225 million women worldwide are deprived of their basic bodily autonomy by laws or acts of violence against women.
Women are being murdered for being a woman; femicide is more likely to be violent and intimate in nature.
Lack of Access to Education
By remaining uneducated, it is easier for women to be forced into ignorance and submissive to the systemic power around them.
In contexts affected by fragility, conflict, and violence, girls are 2.5 times more likely to be out of school.
In homes where parents must choose between sending a son or daughter to school due to poverty, the girl will often be held back.
In societies where women are expected to be domestically educated, there lacks purpose for girls getting an education.
Traveling to school is often unsafe, with 246 million girls and boys harassed on their way to school each year. Girls are more susceptible to being targeted for rape, abduction, and trafficking.
In communities that discriminate economically against women, an education is not valuable due to the inability to be financially independent from their husband.
Healthcare Inequity
71% of women will experience medical gaslighting by a physician that attempts to convince them that their symptoms are 'imagined'.
Uninsured women lack critical resources such as mammograms, pap smears, and blood pressure checks to ensure healthy living.
A lack of education and advocacy for sexual and reproductive health leaves women susceptible to higher rates of STDs, lack of contraceptives, and shame around sex.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) leaves women with irreparable trauma and physical defects while also perpetuating gender inequality.
The stigmatization of mental health directly impacts women, as they are twice as likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Maternal mortality rates are enabled by a lack of providers, insurance, postpartum support, and racial and socioeconomic disparities.
Workplace Discrimination
Sexual harassment in the workplace is one of the most relevant issues, with a reported 10% of complaint filings having to do with this topic.
Data collected shows that women are still earning less than their male counterparts, with an even worse widening gap for marginalized women.
Women in the workforce are less likely to be found in positions of power; just over 10% of Fortune 500 companies are led by women.
Paid maternity leave and accommodations are limited to individual employers and in some cases, not available at all, leaving women to choose between family and career.
Female dominated workforces (teaching, nursing, secretary positions) are often deemed as less significant than male dominated careers.
Women's hobbies and passions are consistently condemned as silly by males; men's hobbies are praised as productive and interesting.
