Fragility - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Why?
      - It interests me to show fragility and capture the essence of beauty in the inconsequential, the fragile, the imperfect. For me this encapsulates something very human; our vulnerabilities and inescapable impermanence. I personally picked this topic to reflect me. For example:
      - If I take a hammer and smash the watch, I am left with fragments, pieces that are separate and have no working relationship with each other. Now, what I tell myself is similar to taking a hammer to the watch. I used to tell myself feeling certain things this way is weak, soft and feeble, just like the hammer fragmenting pieces of the watch. Continuously breaking the watch into fragments, denying and smashing these feelings down. Soon to realise the fact there is beauty in it,
      - A sign of strength is accepting your frailty. It demonstrates that you are not afraid to see yourself for who you really are—a flawed human being who frequently makes mistakes and always needs help. Because they let things "get to them," we argue that weak individuals are frail. Because they have decided to feel despite having endured a lifetime of sadness, pain, and regret, these weak souls are actually the most resilient of all.
      - Embracing fragility is a sign of strength. It shows you are not frightened to look at yourself as you are: as a being who is sometimes at fault, often wrong, and always needing assistance in some way or another. We say fragile people are weak because they allow things to ‘get to them’. Actually, these fragile souls are the most resilient of all because, in the face of a lifetime of sorrow, pain and regret, they have still chosen to feel.
- - - - “I could not paint at all if I had to paint slowly. Every effect is so transient, it must be rapidly painted.”
- - - - RB: Can you say something about your working methods?
        SEC: My planning of a piece is often quite loose and developed further by experimentation. However I start by considering the ideas which I am exploring or addressing, the marks which will enable me to do this and how a work will interact with a surface or space to achieve this. For example my piece Mark, Touch, Press, 2016 used drawn finger prints on pressed petals to address identity and the human impact on the natural world. Further emphasized with the petals displayed pinned like specimens, but fragile without a cabinet to contain them. This piece was deeply vulnerable yet that was important – to bring it in to the now, and to highlight that vulnerability – in a world where our impact is having detrimental effects.
