Learning to Cope Through Environment
My grandparents' house has helped me cope with OCD
My grandparents' home has a lot of grounding elements-- it is far away from any pressures I have in life, the wi-fi doesn't always work, and there is beautiful scenery all around
My family gathers at my grandparents' home-- they are my support system
My family naturally provides me with comfort just by being in their presence
When I was diagnosed with OCD, I was given action items that were difficult to work through
Being in this area helped me to sort out what was going on in my mind, where to start, and what I needed to do to alleviate some symptoms. Example: start with small actions first
Having a space for reflection and unconditional love, a grounding environment, allowed me to further my journey in overcoming parts of my OCD
How environment can impact mental health
A calm environment can allow an individual to become more at ease and vice versa
Having a stressful or toxic environment won't allow for mental clarity as more external pressures are being placed on an individual
Look into: Finding time away from any environment that has brought stress can alleviate mental pressures
How self reflection and freedom from the external world can benefit an individual
Without external thoughts, wants, needs, etc. an individual can tune into their 'self'
Being able to reflect on emotions and feelings can provide more clarity as to what 'next steps' one should pursue, how they should handle tough situations, how certain aspects of life make them feel, etc.
Having self reflection can provide a more productive and sound experience when "re-entering" the external world
Ways that others can provide aid without knowing
Family or friends can offer insight or feeling outside of yourself
Others may promote a new aspect you would like to explore within yourself, example: passion
Those who know you might be able to naturally provide comfort when you are struggling (whether struggle is expressed or not)
The strength in a support system
Having a support system to rely on can take some pressure off internal issues
Support systems might offer advice you wouldn't be able to hear elsewhere
Look into: Knowing you have people with you wanting to see you succeed can be beneficial towards your development through hardships
Incorporating a ‘grounding’ space into your life
'Grounding' spaces make you feel at ease, bring you 'back to Earth' and away from the "hustle and bustle" of normal life
Grounding spaces can naturally introduce new sensations of relaxation or elation
Grounding spaces make it easy to promote self reflection
Why mental clarity is hard to find and how to pursue it
The outside world can fill our minds with pressures from school, work, social events, etc.
External events can make it difficult to focus on what we need as a 'self' or an individual
Discovering any place that can 'disconnect' you and allow your mind to be clear can be beneficial
