Social Media

- Keep in touch with friends
- Increased self-esteem through "likes"
- Social network community: meet like-minded individuals, attract them into your circle

Bad

- Linked to depression in teenagers
- Victimisation of young people online received increased level of scrutiny (high profile suicides of teenagers reportedly bullied on various social networks)
- Sense of loneliness due to face to face interaction
- Those who spent the most time on social media are twice as likely to experience social isolation: lack of sense of social belonging, engagement with others and fulfilling relationships
- Displace f2f interaction, feel excluded
e.g. FOMO
- Inaccurate information
- Fake and misleading news stories: can harm physical health
- Can also harm mental health: cause unnecessary anxiousness, affect mental well-being in the long term
e.g. Famous Russian Influencer who was well know for following a strictly vegan diet consisting of only raw vegetables was found to have died recently. With a large following, she was a role model to many as she claimed that this diet helped her to look younger and healthier compared to many of her peers who have lost the "essence of life". The allure of trendy diets may pose a threat to one's physical health if they choose to hop on the bandwagon
