Codes and Conventions of Music videos
Symbolic code
style
Performance : features a solo artist or a band performing in front of the camera, aiming to focus on the artist and entertain the audience to keep watching the music video.
Experimental : does not show the performer traditionally performing the song, and it does not focus on story telling as well. As the music video does not match with the lyrics, the creator tend to be artistic, innovative and abstract.
Narrative : features the series of shots that are designed to tell a logically stories, based on the lyrics. It is also known as a storyline music videos.
Mise-en-scene
Lighting : helps to set the tone and the mood of the music video, and it also helps or hinders the narratives of the music videos carry.
Key lighting : is typically diffused to allow for a wider spread exposure and softer lighting style. It is often used to create a cheerful, optimistic, and up-beat mood that can typically be found in comedies, sitcoms, or rom-coms.
Back lighting : when the light source is placed behind the subject. It creates silhouettes and a glowing effect on the subject. This is used to create a dramatic effect and emphasize the subject in a mysterious way.
Side lighting : when the light source is placed on either side of the subject (right or left), creating a shadow on one half of the subject and sculpts the subject’s features. The contrast between light and shadow creates a sense of mystery.
Props : are used to expose the information and provide the additional context to the audience. And it can be utilized for the marketing campaigns as well.
Costumes : Costumes allow the audience to understand the context of the music video and portray the characters in the music video, also in many music videos, it helps the audience to differentiate between the different times of the day, but also whether it is the narrative or performance element of the video.
Location : is utilized to set the tones, enhance the storytelling, and frames the artist's brand image. It's the background story of the music videos that the artist wants to expose.

Dance : can be used to convey the storyline and emphasize the themes of the music videos, often appears in the performance music videos.
Acting : helps to portray the story in the music videos and especially in the narratives type of music video. It can be naturalistic or exaggerated depending on the narratives in the music videos.
Body language : helps to portray the emotion of the character in the music videos

camera shots
extreme close up shot : when a camera frames a subject very closely, often so much so that the outer portions of the subject are cut off by the edges of the frame.
close up shot : when a camera frames the subjects at close range intended to show greater detail to the viewer.
long shot : typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings.
medium shot : when a camera stretches from around the waist (or sometimes the knees) of a subject up to their head.
establishing shot : typically wide or extreme wide shots of buildings or landscapes.
camera angles
high angle shot : when the camera looks down at the subject from above.
low angle shot : when a camera is placed low the average eye line and pointing up.
eye-view angle shot : when a camera is placed at the same level as the characters in the frame.
camera movements
zoom shot : when the focal length of a camera lens is adjusted to give the illusion of moving closer or further away from the subject.
panning shot :when the camera turns
or pans horizontal or vertical.
dolly shot : when a camera moves towards, away from, or alongside from the subjects and is mounted on a dolly.
tilt shot : when the camera stays fixed, but rotates up and down on a vertical plane.
Editing
Continuity editing : the process of combing more or less related shots.
Jump cuts : when a single shot is broken with a cut that makes the subject appear to jump instantly forward in time.
A montage : when separate sections are edited together to create a continuous whole.
Parallel editing : when the scenes happening at the sane time alternate with one another.
effects : for example, CGI, color hues, special effects, layer making.
sound
non-diegetic sound :sound that is added in post-production, such as a narrator’s summary, musical scores, and custom sound effects.
diegetic sound : sound that originates from within the video or film's world is termed, and it often happens at the same time that the action takes place
