DEFINITION: PREGNANCY LOSS UNDER 24 WEEKS OF GESTATION
-pregnancy loss before fetal viability or fetal weight of less than 500g-most miscarriage occur in 2nd or 3rd month

Placenta located over or encroaching near cervical os after 28 weeks of gestation
*can only be diagnosed in 3rd trimester

- umbilical cord does not inset into placenta properly
-> umbilical cord blood vessels travel outside placenta
-> unprotected & at risk of breaking
- low-lying placenta increase vulnerability for blood vessels to burst once labour begins as foetus move towards cervix

- Placenta splits into two lobes, with umbilical cord connecting one lobe to another
- If exposed blood vessels travelling between the lobes lie close to the cervix, it can burst and bleed one labour starts
