Chapter 2 Style
Individual words
Be as precise as possible
NOT:kept in the cold
Kept at 0 C
Keep it simple
Do not use unnecessary words or phrases
shorter is better; if it doesn't add anything don't add it
Use easier word to describe procedures
Too many abbreviations may cause confusion
Use proper terminology and nomenclature
Human genes are formatted different than other genes; italics and capitals matter!
Style Points
First person active voice
Observations are written about in past tense
Get to the point quickly
1 idea per sentence
Word Placement
Establish importance
End of sentence to add more emphasis; beginning of sentence for less important connections.
Place familiar words or phrases at the beginning of sentence
Newer and complex terminology after the common terms
Avoid strings of nouns; articles are acceptable
Chapter 3: Paragraph composition
Topic sentence
Establish the topic of the paragraph
Broad; rest of paragraph as support
Supporting sentences
Provide detail for topic sentence
Refer to topics in the order they are presented in the topic sentecne
Be consistent
Same point of view for entire paragraph
Fully explain one point before moving to the next one
Transitions
Every sentence should establish itself and relate to the previous and next sentence
End a sentence with certain terminology then continue with same terminology
Composition Position
Establish importance
Highlight most important point in the paragraph
Omit and limit less important points
