Mesopotamia
Location: In the text it said that two great rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates flowed southward in the Middle East. Also, on page 6 it said that "extended into parts of what is now Turkey, Syria, and southwestern Iran." (Steele 6)
Government: In the text it said, "The small villages built in Mesopotamia between 7000 and 4000 BCE grew bigger. They traded for items like pottery and tools for the village." (Steele 8)
Art: The author says, "As the centuries passed, hunting for food still continued in wetlands, forests, and mountains. Wild bulls or lions were often used, because they were associated with the legend of Gilgamesh." (Steele 44)
Religion: The author states that, "The Sumerians worshiped many gods and goddesses. They believed that the stars traveling across the night sky were the cows of Sin or Nanna, the horned Moon god. (Steele 14)
Writing: In the text it says, as soon as civilizations started to rise up people started to make a language. "They used pictures to represent cattle, grain, or fish. Over the centuries the marks developed into a script." (Steele 12)
Architecture: The author says that, A Ziggurat, "a massive terrace platform made of brick. The Ziggurats themselves have small temples or shrines on top reached by long stairways." (Steele 24)
Ancient Egypt
Government: In the text it said," When people approached the king, they kissed the ground at his feet. The author states," The people of the highest status were attending the royal court." (Hart 12)
Religion: In the text it says,"The Egyptians worshiped hundreds of different gods and goddesses, and sometimes it is difficult to work out who was who." Also it says, " Many of the gods are represented by animals: a baboon might stand for Thoth, god of wisdom, at one temple a moon god named Khonsu at another." (Hart 24)
Location: In the text it says," Desert covers more than 90 percent of Egypt. Called the " Red Land," the desert supported only small settlements in wadis and oases." In the text it also states,"The Egyptians lived on the banks of the Nile Rover or beside canals extending from it." (Hart 8)
Art: In the text it states,"The Egyptians lived life to the full. Party scenes on tomb walls, songs on papyri, musical instruments show us how much music revelry meant to them." The author also states,"They had great public festivals, at which thousands of people were entertained with singing and music from flutes, harps, and castanets, and much wine was drunk." (Hart 50)
Architecture: The author wrote the first great pyramid was built as a burial for King Djoser in c.2650 B.C.E, By his gifted architect Imhotep. On page 20, it says "It was supposed to represent a gigantic stairway for the king to climb to join the sun god in the sky". (Hart 20)
Writing: In the text it says, "Scribes had to be experts in writing hieroglyphics, an elaborate form of picture-writing with about 700 different signs." It also says that, "Hieroglyphics were used in temples, tombs, state monuments, and religious papyri. (Hart 34)
