Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: The author wrote that the ancient Greeks called the area Mesopotamia, which means "between the rivers." Which is located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The graphic shows that "most of the ancient Mesopotamia lay within the borders of modern Iraq." (Steele 6)
Writing: On page twelve, the author wrote, "These were pressed into soft clay with a stylus, leaving a wedge shaped mark that hardened. Over the centuries the marks developed into a script that represented sounds as well as meaning." In the text it said, "It's tip made a wedge shape when it was pressed into clay. Combinations of wedges made different symbols." (Steele 12)
Government: The Mesopotamia government was theocracy and they strongly believed that humans were created to serve god. On page ten, it said, "The Sumerians own name for their territory, Ki-en-gir, may have meant "land of the civilized lords." (Steele 10)
Architecture: Mesopotamian architecture was ziggurats. These were pyramid-like buildings that were made out of straw and mud. In the text it said, "Ziggurats looked similar to the stepped pyramids of ancient egypt, which were used as royal tombs, but they were served a different purpose." (Steele 24)
Art: The Mesopotamians created their own arts and technologies. I know this because on page 28, it says, "...they invented the pottery wheel, which made pottery production more efficient." (Steele 28)
Religion: The main religion in Mesopotamia was polytheistic. This means that they believed in more than one god. I know this because on page 14, it says,"Sumerians worshiped many gods and goddesses." (Steele 14)
Ancient Egypt
Location: The Egyptians lived on the bank of the Nile river in northeastern Africa. I know this because it says, "The Egyptians lived on the banks of the Nile river or beside canals extending from it." This is how I know the location of the Egyptians. (Hart 8)
Writing: Egyption writing was called hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics were pictures of things that described things. I know this because on page 34, it says, "Hieroglyphics were an elaborate form of picture-writing with about 700 different signs." (Hart 34)
Religion: In the text, it says, "The Egyptians worshiped hundreds of gods." this piece of evidence shows that their religion is polytheistic." The author wrote "Sometimes it's difficult to figure out who is who." This proves that they believed in a lot of gods. (Hart 24)
Government: Government in Ancient Egypt was a theocracy. I know this because on page 12, it says, "People would often kiss the ground around the King's feet." This evidence shows that Ancient Egypt had a King and they had to respect them.(Hart 12)
Architecture: In Egypt, pyramids were built for sacred and religious purposes and to hold the tombs of pharaohs. I know this because on page 20, it says, "The pyramids were intended to protect the bodies of pharaohs buried deep inside them." (Hart 20)
Art: In ancient Egypt, they wore lots of gold jewelry. I know this because on page 56, it shows pictures of jewelry in all gold.(Hart 56)
South Asia
Writing: Their writing is one of the most complex writing styles. I know this because the text states "Over 400 symbols have been uncovered from different locations." That shows that people have still not figured out what all there language is. (Frances Hall World Studies)
Architecture/Technology: They had very well planned out and futuristic cities. I know this because the text says, "Some rooms had facilities in which waste water was directed to cover drains and these lined the major streets." This was very advanced for the time. (Frances Hall World Studies)
Location: In the text it says, "Around 5,000 years ago, a civilization developed along the Indus River alluvial plain (floodplain), in South Asia, due to the large amount of fertile land and proximity to a water source." I know this because it says that "Over time, a vast number of settlements were built on the banks of the Indus River and surrounding areas." Lastly, the article says, "The Indus River valley covers most of modern day Pakistan." (Frances Hall World Studies)
Government: The Aryan's government was a caste system where people were divided into groups. I know this because the text says, "A caste is a social group in which people are born and they cannot change. The caste system began because the Aryans had four social classes, which they called varnas. People were divided based on wealth and occupation." This shows that Aryan people were divided into groups based on wealth and that they could not change their placement. (Frances Hall World Studies)
Religion: The Aryans main religion was Brahmanism. I know this because the text says, " The religion of the ancient Aryans, known as Brahmanism, was polytheistic and heavily influenced the later development of Hinduism." This shows that the Aryans' religion was Brahmanism. (Frances Hall World Studies)
