Reaction profiles
Basics
-
Graph starts at the energy level of the reactants and finishes with the energy level of the products
-
-
Activation energy (Ea)
-
If the input energy is less than the activation energy there won't be enough energy to start the reactions, nothing will happen
You can find the Ea from its reaction profile by looking at the difference between where the curve starts and the highest point
-
Bond energies
-
Energy and bonding
Energy must be supplies to break existing bonds, breaking bonds is exothermic
Energy is released when new bonds are formed, making bonds is exothermic
Overall energy change
Depends on whether the amount of energy absorbed when the bonds in the reactants are broken is more or less than the amount of energy released when bonds are made
In an exothemric reactions, the energy released in bond formation is gerate than the energy used in breaking bonds, leftover energy is released into surrounding
In an endothermic reactions, the energy required to break old bonds is greater than the energy released when new bonds are formed, extra energy is absorbed from the surroundings
Bond energy calculations
-
Work out the amount of energy used in bond breaking by adding the bond energies of all the reactants
Work out the energy released in bond making by adding the bond energies from all the bonds in the products
