Chapter 1
UNDERSTANDING
THE BASICS
In the beginning
Body language could be found in many areas of society, secifically in entertainment, such as silent movies, Charlie Chaplin being the most reknown actor of these.
Mehrabian recognized that we communicate the most non-verbally and this influences our desicions way more than what we see
We tend to make judgements about others when we first meet them, even when we are trying to be polite, unfortunately our bodies always give away our true feelings and intentions
This can occur if somebody observes our gestures, the things we say, the context in which we say it and our real emotions will be revealed.
The original form of communication was the ability to read a person's attitudes and thoughts by their behaviour.
Politicians acknowledge the importance of body language and what it conveys
Non-verbal signals can be genetic, inborn, or culturally learned, for example: crossing our arms
Body language is not something that can be facked, and even if you try, it can only go on for a short while.
To become a good reader it is necessary to dedicate time to learning and improving your body language reading skills
Reading body language
We might find that women have an easier time reading a persons body language, this is because they tend to pay more attention to details.
Women are able to juggle various topics while men lack the facility to do so, making it difficult for them to remain focused in a conversation.
Furtune tellers can tell you what they observe through "cold reading" combining body language, statistics, and what they know about human nature is a fool proof plan to get naive people to fall in their trap
Reading body language is not easy, a lot of aspects go into play when doing this and could affect the information we observe from their body, such as clothes or disabilities.
Older people are harder to read than younger ones because they have less muscle tone in the face. They instantly reveal when they are telling a lie and other emotions they may be experiencing.
Three Rules for Accurate Reading
Rule 1. Read Gestures in Clusters
A body language
cluster, just like a verbal sentence, needs at least three words in it before you can accurately define each of the words.
Rule 2. Look for Congruence
The body language must go in hand with what is being verbally said.
Rule 3. Read Gestures in Context
All gestures should be considered in the context in which they occur.
