Working with misinformation and misunderstanding while learning about one's culture
Who
Young adults (ages 20-39) who are willing to learn and communicate to know more about culture
What
Many young adults find it difficult to communicate and find out more about one's culture
Culture-specific learning platforms
Although there are many websites, apps, and translators to understand what the other person is saying (if they are speaking different languages). While this may be true the precision and accuracy of these components, make us second doubt ourselves. In addition, all these websites seem to be static and have no user interaction within them.
Communication issues
When communicating with someone there will be differences in culture making it harder to communicate.
When not speaking the same language it can be hard to communicate. Although there are translators and apps to help with this, many seem to be less precise and accurate.
When you don't know the tone and body language of the speaker the intended message they were meant to display may not also be displayed. For example, when making a joke about someone they might think it's not a joke and take it seriously without knowing their tone and body language.
Where
Eduaction
By learning one's culture you can raise global awareness. It helps you understand and appreciate the complexity of global issues and foster a sense of global citizenship.
It can also help gain some sense of cultural competence. This helps to interact effectively and respectfully with people from different cultural backgrounds. In other words, you will be able to communicate and collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
By learning about one's culture you can also think more critically. In other words, by learning about culture you can also learn why people from different cultures behave and think the way they do. This also helps to eliminate stereotypes and encourages empathy and open-mindedness towards people in the process.
Travel
By learning about a culture then travelling it would be easier to understand many things, and be more respectful. By learning about a culture and going to a country we would know how to act properly in public instead of being disrespectful.
Why
When visiting another country it would be useful to know it's culture and practises they have. This is done through communicating with someone from that country. If you don't know their language or have misunderstandings it can often be difficult to comprehend and understand what they are saying.
Culture determines how a community reacts, responds, and grows. By learning one's culture we can see why someone reacts or acts the way they do. For example, eating loud and slurping in Japan is often shown as appreciation of the food and how good it is. Whereas in the US, eating too loudly is shown as being rude.
By learning another language we are also learning their culture in the process. Not to include that it also helps us improve our communication skills, again helping us to talk to others more frequently and being keen to know about their culture.
How
No one likes to have a hassle when communicating with someone, just like in person communication, communication online should also be just as simple as moving your lips. So we must incorporate some key features to make the lives of users easier.
