AAST355- Asian American in Film - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Portrayed as a seductive woman especially considering how she started off as an :"Oriental dancer" in the beginning of the movie and was dressed in an elaborate dress completely in gold sequins.
      - Ling Moy seduced 2 men with her beauty, Ronald and Ah Kee.
      - Ling Moy ended up being a dangerous woman who used her looks to seduce men into a false sense of security and later used these looks to fool, kidnap, and for the most part, get away with a majority of her plans for revenge.
      - According to When dragon ladies die by Liu, a Dragon Lady is defined to have "masculine racial pride" which "reinforces the duplicity of being Asian and being a woman". This was shown in Daughter of the Dragon, when she pulls off the ruse of getting revenger for her fathers death to fulfill the role a son would have for him.
    - - There were various scenes depicting how Mr. Moore sexualized Yoko and tried to have an affair with her by inviting her to his hotel room.
      - Bob Moore tried to rape Yoko in one scene, and the main reason he felt like he had the privilege to be able to do so was because of her race and how Asians were constantly hypersexualized in the media. This is something he would ever think of doing, if he knew it was Lucy.
      - Most of the Asian women in this film, including Suzie, were prostitutes. A majority of their clothes were also short dresses that hugged their bodies, and while it would be normal today to wear things like that, the movie contrasted this with what Western, "more respectable women", wore and they would wear knee-length dresses that were loosely fitted.
        
        This movie especially relates to the quote from Shimizu's Hypersexuality, about how Asian woman in Hollywood works as no more than a symbol complicit with racist sexuality. Especially because of how Suzie is basically a prostitute and does not really have any attractive personality traits other than her physical looks, so it shows how Hollywood generalizes this Asian woman stereotype to all women, by oversexualizing them.
      - When Suzie wore short Asian dresses, Robert was accepting of it, however when she switched the look to the scandalous blue western dress he was enraged. This scene implied that Robert's affection for Suzie may be tied to her Asian heritage (asian fetish), which may be the result of how westerners hypersexualize asian women.
      - Throughout the movie there is still an incorporation of Asian females being prostitutes. For example the fight scene where Williams is thrown through a room.
      - In Surname Viet, the women were expected to fulfill all the beauty standards and if that standard was not met they would not be able to get a husband. These high expectations could exemplify hypersexuality with how women are expected to be a level of beautiful that was almost unachievable (the standards are unrealistic).
      - In Crazy Rich Asians, Kitty Pong was highly sexualized and was the epitome of the seductive Asian beauty.
      - In Seshagiri's At the Crossroads of Two Empires, it is revealed how feminists critique the female outfits as " costume design reduced Indian and African women to exotic spectacle". This reveals how the outfits from even a cultural standpoint were exotified to the hypersexualize women and make them more feminine and sexualized.
    - - Good Academic standing: Both Ben and Daric portray the model minority through their appearance of fitting the model minority stereotype. Both are straight A students and are involved in various clubs (Daric is president of many of them). They would both be considered overachieving especially considering how they aim high, Ben for example is trying to get into an Ivy League school. Ben's overachieving nature is also displayed at his job when he memorized the calories each food had just by reading the manual.
      - The way the 8-year old explained the story with how an unemployed white man was racist towards a working Asian man, so he killed him thinking that Vincent was Japanese because of the stereotype that Asians (specifically Japanese people) were stealing their jobs. This is part of the model minority stereotype because its part of what makes Asians the "model" immigrants.
      - In Crazy Rich Asians, the promotion of the model minority stereotype both, occurred and was rejected at the same time. Nick's character was shown to be handsome, rich, smart, and loving but other characters like Bernard were shown to be the opposite of the model with his immoral ways.
- - - - Lucy smoked cigarettes and has short hair.
      - Yoko would bow to everyone, which is a sign of respect. She would also avoid people's eyes especially when they were men.
      - While Lucy's personality was more dominant, considering how she hid her identity from her husband to act in a movie, Yoko was portrayed as more submissive where even when she was about to be raped her issue was of how it was dishonoring her ancestors.
    - - Kay was portrayed as an intelligent woman who worked at her father's company as his secretary. Lucy on the other hand, was portrayed as an illiterate prostitute.
      - In the bedroom scene where Robert and Kay arrive at his room, instead of responding to Lucy's childish taunts she calmly excused herself while retorting a jab at Robert about how "it has been a lovely evening, all of it". Lucy however is shown to be more bratty where she whines and cries when she can't get what she wants, and purposefully ignores what she doesn't want to hear, like when Robert asks her to leave.
- - - - One bias that formed automatically as a result of the time period (WW2) and the Japanese internment camps was the Japanese hatred that was propagated from within the country. For example in Detroit Blues by Zia it was mentioned how "The Japanese auto imports were everything...cheap to buy, cheap to run, well made and dependable. They were easy to hate". That plus the line "It felt dangerous to have an Asian face", shows how much Asian was perpetuated throughout that time through media and through the government rules, like with internment camps. This relates back to what was discussed in History and Memory with the Japanese internment camps.
- - - - In Shimizu's "Straitjacket Sexualities", one point he made that connects to Better Luck Tomorrow was his elaboration on how men tend "to reach for phallic power to remedy the wound of asexuality and effeminacy". This is important when they feel challenged and it portrays hypermasculinization where they feel the need to overcompensate and show their masculine say in toxic ways.
- - - - This can contrast to Multicultural Redemption: Crazy Rich Asians and the Politics of Representation by Sugino, where their assimilation with the Western world was noted through their portrayal "as a cosmopolitan class of sophisticated, wealthy families educated in Western universities and traditions". However despite this outward appearance of westernization a lot of the traditions of the Young family and their mindsets were still closely aligned with Asian culture. For example, their idea of marrying to someone with a good family, or their obsession with the maintenance of family honor.
