Understanding/Compassion
What is compassion? By definition: "
Compassion and empathy both refer to a caring response to someone else’s distress. While empathy refers to an active sharing in the emotional experience of the other person, compassion adds to that emotional experience a desire to alleviate the person’s distress.
'(Webster, M)
Why is Compassion and the understanding of others important for the development of a great teacher?
As a teacher you will be interacting with students and staff from various cultures, identities, languages, and backgrounds this creates a new and diverse environment! As our world is constantly changing and evolving it is important to develop the skills to better understand the community around you, but how can we do that ?
Willingness to learn
Taking the time to learn about your students creates a better bond between student and teacher as well as creating a safe space outside of home. Having an adult a student can trust can lead to a better journey in education for each child. Alongside each child is a new way of learning, not only for the student but for the teacher as well. Say you have a student who struggles with dyslexia but the school does not have the resources to get them an individual education plan? you as a teacher can (and should) learn what dyslexia is, how it effects students, and what ways are helpful and effective in the future of this students education. That situation is nearly one of many possible ones so the willingness to learn even as a university graduated teacher is a great trait to have as it betters both you and your teaching skills.
Safe spaces in an otherwise stressful environment aide in the educative development of each student.
Patience to Understand
Kids, especially other peoples kids can be wonderful to teach and while some may not be as "easy" to teach it does not give any teacher the right to judge a child on their actions especially if you are just meeting this student for the first time. Remember how we previously touched on backgrounds? everyone has their own story that makes them who they are today, some may be really tough and some might be "average", it is proven in various fields of education that the development of a child is heavily influenced by both their home life as well as their life within the education system. Students spend an average of 7-8 hours at school each day and only a fraction of that is spent with one teacher which does not give much time to "get to know" each and every one of them but, truly understanding your students takes time and patience.
Committed
If a teacher is not committed, the students will not be committed either. A committed teacher prepares their lesson plans ahead, gives feedback/grades back to students in a timely manner, and shows their students that they want to teach.
Kindness
Kindness is one of the most important valuables when it comes to the great teacher. Showing students kindness, especially in the early years can help to form them into being great people of the world.
Passion
According to Marriam-Webster Dictionary,
passion
, in this context, is defined as "a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept."
Why is passion an important attitude for a teacher to harbour toward their profession?
Influence
Teachers are meant to be role models for their students. A teacher who shows passion for their profession proves to their students that they want to be there and they want to teach them. It proves to the students that they care about what they do. This attitude portrays the teacher as a caring and approachable individual.
Quality
A teacher with passion for their profession vastly increases the quality of the classroom. People often say that one can "light up a room." A passionate teacher is like the match that lights the flames in every one of their students, thus lighting up the classroom.
Openness
In order to help students feel comfortable coming to their teacher about issues, teachers need to be open with their students. This can be as simple as telling their students a little bit abiut themselves so students can feel more connected to their teacher.
Digitize
Perhaps the most stark difference between the '21st Century Teacher' as opposed to teachers of the past is access to technology. By utilizing technology in the classroom, teachers have the ability to digitize and innovate. Todays teachers have the creative liberty to teach their course content in hundreds of new ways, while offering their students hundreds of different way to submit work! Take for example, this very concept map who's basic form was generated by AI. And, using the resources provided through the internet, we were able to expand upon the map in meaningful ways with new ideas.
Innovate
Creativity
Creativity is vital in teaching as it keeps students engaged in the subject matter. It helps differentiate teachers from each other and can often times lead to added participation, enthusiasm and interest. Creativity also helps students feel like individuals and helps keeps course work interesting rather than repetition.
Leadership
A teacher with stellar leadership skills will be a great role model for students to stand their own ground and be able to lead their life in a great way. When a student has the ability to lead fearlessly, they have a greater chance of being able to guide themselves to success in their later life.
Why is leadership important for a great teacher?
When a great teacher shows their students how to lead. Not only will those students be able to lead themselves and others ferociously, but they will also have the confidence to lead without fear.
Enthusiasm
An enthusiastic teacher will keep students engaged.
Respect
