Timezone problems for workers living abroad
Why it is happening
There are several reasons for why this problems is in our way in today's age.
Globalization
Remote jobs have become more popular after the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the world is growing and we are all trying to communicate with one another from different lands, there are problems regarding timezones.
Companies
The need for traveling to distant countries for increasing the profit which a company may be making or to settle any problems/advance into new parts of the world.
Companies may need to have certain employees in other countries for duty/inspection purposes or to sell their product in various countries.
Where it is happening
This problem is occurring worldwide as it is a problem concerning people overseas, in different countries/continents etc.
Schools
Work stations/Offices
Homes
Online in general
What the problem is:
The challenge of managing collaboration/tasks with co-workers/teams from different timezones at a short-term or long term basis.
Short-term basis: Oftentimes, short-term timezone disparities do not tend to have a significant adverse effect upon the individual regarding their career and overall position in life. Though, if these short-term occurrences happen often, then they can result in the individual's potential and influence to be deteriorated.
Long-term basis: In the long run, if someone has to interact with other individuals in distant timezones due to working circumstances constantly, then it can often result in many adverse effects upon said individual. These include social, health implications among others.
How the problem is affecting individuals
People living in different timezones from their team/co-workers are unable to advance in their careers as much as others.
Health
Their health and sleep is often disrupted. This is due to the fact that they often have to stay up at absurd times or being unable to follow their circadian rhythms, viewing bright lights at irregular times, among much more. Their schedules is often disruptive as well. They are also more likely to experience mental health problems or stress-related problems due to the fact that they are socially-isolated and they may have pressing deadlines at abnormal times.
Work-life balance
Due to these timezone differences, the employees are often unable to maintain work-life balance. They are unable to make enough time for themselves, and sometimes going outside for important work may become difficult if they have to follow a schedule where they are working during the evening/night and must sleep during the day etc. This also heavily impacts their relationships with friends, family members etc. They will be unable to spend as much time with their family members if they have a different schedule, e.g. staying up at night etc.
Communicating with their team/co-workers
Not being able to communicate/collaborate with their team/co-workers could also many problems. Such as miscommunication leading to the wrong actions being made or not getting the work done as fast as possible as they were unable to clearly understand it. Furthermore, the fact that they are unable to make a presence in important meetings is definitely one of the biggest demerits here.
Productivity
The workers productivity is often diminished due to the fact that they are unable to get clear directions or clarify instructions that they were told. Moreover, due to communication/collaboration problems they will not be able to understand and make as much of an impact as they could've. With worse sleep, their productivity will also go down.
Who is being influenced
Employees(18+ years old), living in different countries and working with their co-workers from different timezones.
The family members/relatives/friends of these employees are also unable to contact them as often. The work-life balance is quite unsustainable due to this problem.
