During the early Qing dynasty, women were wearing small sleeves and long skirts kind of hanfu. After the Qianlong period, there was a shift in fashion. The clothes became fatter and shorter, the cuffs became wider, and Yunjian was added. By the late Qing, pants became the major choice of attire for women.

Cheongsam - Qipao
During the early times of the Republic of China, cheongsams' style clothing was popular.
During the time of the Republic of China, the qipao (cheongsam) was a kind of school uniform for women.
There was another kind of uniform for women. It looked like a qipao but was in two parts – a top and a bottom. It was plain, without any embroidery, and usually included a cropped cheongsam top and black skirt. It was known as the “civilized new outfit”. This uniform became a popular choice during the May Fourth Movement.
