lung volume definitions
inspiratory reserve volume
the maximal amount of additional air that can be drawn into the lungs by determined effort after normal inspiration
expiratory reserve rolume
the additional amount of air that can be expired from the lungs by determined effort after normal expiration
tidal volume
the amount of air which passes into and out of the lungs during normal breathing
residual volume
the amount of air which remains in the lungs after fully forcibly exhaling
conditions under which ventilation/perfusion mismatch occur
alveolar dead space
posture
venous-arterial shunt
lung capacity definitions
vital capacity
greatest volume of air that can be expelled from the lungs after taking the deepest possible breath
functional residual capacity
volume of air present in the lungs after passive expiration
sum of the expiratory reserve volume and the residual volume
inspiratory capacity
volume of air which can be inspired following a normal, quiet expiration
equal to tidal volume + inspiratory reserve volume
total lung capacity
total amount of air in the lungs after taking the deepest breath possible

minute ventialtion
total volume of air entering the lungs in the space of a minute
equal to breathing rate x tidal volume
dead space
portion of the respiratory system which is external to the bronchioles and through which air must pass to reach the bronchioles and alveoli

number of movements of inspiration and expiration per minute
measured by the amount of times the chest rises or falls in a minute
alveolar ventialtion
amount of fresh air reaching the alveoli per minute
estimated by multiplying together the respiratory frequency and the difference between tidal volume and dead space
