Patient Education
Educate your patient on ways to prevent transmission
things like good hand hygiene, social distancing, staying away from others if you have the virus
educate on the vaccine, and where to get this done at
educate patient on how to monitor their temperature, and what OTC medications would be good to take if they develop mild symptoms
Educate patient on drinking plenty of fluids, and staying hydrated
Tell patient about serious symptoms of the virus and when they should come in if having these symptoms
Pathophysiology
COVID-19 is a disease caused by a virus SARS-CoV-2
it spread very quickly from person to person and is very contagious
1 million + people have died from it in the US
COVID-19 primarily attacks your respiratory system, but it can attack other systems as well
Assessment
manifestations:
some patients are asymptomatic and some patients have severe symptoms that are life threatening
common symptoms
fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea
symptoms that are emergent/life threatening
trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in chest, altered mental status, inability to wake up or stay awake during the day, blue lips or face
symptoms usually appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus
Ask about:
travel in the last 14 days
diagnositcs
viral tests tell you if a person has the active infection
antibody tests tells you if the person previously had COVID 19
Interventions
Stopping transmission of COVID 19
Transmission is droplet and airborne precautions
Wear an N95 or CAPR, gown, gloves, shoe covers and eye protection when entering the room
when the patient is out of the room, they must wear a mask as well
good hand hygeine
social distancing
staying home and away from other people to avoid developing virus
quarantining if you are infected
vaccination
treatments
for severe cases:
noninvasive ventilation, intubation with mechanical ventilation, and ECMO
for mild cases:
symptomatic treatment
OTC products like fever reducers, cough suppressants (unless having a productive cough), pain relievers
antiviral remdesivir
