COMPUTER
CLASSIFICATIONS OF COMPUTER ACCORDING TO SIZE
EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
Computer-based systems which are standalone electronic hardware designed to perform dedicated computing tasks
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Are the most common and widely used computers today which you can see in homes, schools, and in most business. There are two types of microcomputers - the desktop computer and the notebook computer
SERVERS
Used to provide resources, services, and functionality to client computers in a server-client network model
MAINFRAME COMPUTERS
Are less powerful than supercomputers but are capable of great processing speed, multi-tasking capability, and high data storage
SUPERCOMPUTER
These high capacity computers that run continuously are being used by very large organizations, mostly big corporations and government institutions
MID-RANGE
They may be used fr certain assembly line operations or manufacturing stages in big Companies. The size of mid rnge computers may be as big as a washing machine. Maybe a stand-alone system for specialized applications including network servers.
ELEMENTS OF THE COMPUTER SYSTEM
CONNECTIVITY
Aside from the five information system technology components, another important element of a computer is CONNECTIVITY. Connectivity allows the computer to acess and share data and information that are available somewhere else.
DATA
Inlude texts, numbers, sounds, imiages, and video that are still unprocessed.
PRODCEDURE
Procedures are the set of guidelines and rules to follow when using hardware, software applications, and data. The procedures are usually written and well document in manuals that are included in most software packages.
PEOPLE
Are the most important part of the Information Systems Technology. It is the people or the end users like you and me, who will operate, input the data, and the use the resulting information to our personal and business lives to be productive and make effective decisions.
SOFTWARE
Software or programs are instructions that tell the computer how it should do its work. The main purpose of a program is to process the data (raw facts) into usable information. There are 2 kinds of software:
SYSTEM SOFTWARE
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
HARDWARE
Is the physical equipment that implements the data processing so that useful information may come as a result. Hardware are the physical parts or components of a computer as follows:
COMMUNICATION DEVICES
Are components that connect the computer to the internet and other external devices. Example: Modem, network card, wifi crd, and bluetooth
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Is the electronic circuitry inside the CPU case where the operations of sat and information are controlled and where programs are executed. Also included inside the CPU case are the motherboard, microprocessor power supply ram, CD drive, hard drive, and graphics/video card.
Input Units
Concert data and instructions into electronic form input into the computer
Output units
Convert electronic data produced by the computer system and display them in a form that the user can understand
