Coups in Africa
-
Trend
Since 2020 Africa has been gripped by a string coups which have seen 10 attempted coups [1], these have mostly been localised to the Sahel.
African countries that have faced coups include Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Chad, Mali, Sudan and Gabon [2] (all bar Gabon are in the Sahel).
This follows a period of relative carm in Africa inwhich between 2007 and 2018 there were no attempted coups in Africa [3]
However, in general this maps a decline in democracy globally with their being 'soft' coups, where politicans expanding and retain power effectivily becoming dicators (such as in Tunisea), as well as 'hard' coups where there is literal change in government.
