Horation Nelson/ Battle of Trafalgar
Nelson's early life
Nelson was born in 1758
His dad's job was to make shoes so his start to life ws not a priviliged one
His uncle was a captian in the Royal Navy
His uncle urged him to join and he agreed
When he first joined, he was a low ranking sailor but began to work his way up the ranks to the rank of admiral
Nelson's tactics
The normal method of attack was to make a column and shoot the enemy as they passed with their column
Nelson thought that it would be more effective if he attacked from the front of his ships
He would then got between two of the enemy ships and then use the cannons on the side
He first used this tactic at the battle of Saint Vincent and it proved to be very effective
It was a high risk and high reward strategy
The tactic also meant that battles had a victorious side
This is because the old tactic often lead battles with no conclusion whereas this new tactic made sure that there was an end
Overall, the tactic was highly effective
Nelson's death
The medics could not do anything
Nelson survived until the end of the battle
A marine from the French ship had hit him in the shoulder
The HMS Victory had collided with another ship
His last words were 'Thank God I have done my duty'
He died in 1805 on the 21st of October
The Battle of Trafalgar
The battle took place in 1805 and was a very important battle in the Napoleonic war
The two fleets had to wait a very long time before the battle could actually start because of weather
The French had 33 ships in the battle
But the English only had 27
However, the English were better trained and more experienced
The French could not fire the cannonballs as quickly as the English which gave the English the upper hand
For every three cannonballs the English shot, the French would fire two
The reasons for the battle
If Nelson won, England would control the seas and give them the bigger fleet
The morale of the English would increase massively
Nelson had to stop the French from reaching the English channel as that would result in an invasion of England
