In Made Up Asians, Lee mentions the lack of research done on Yellow Face as a whole. There is little on where it originated from, why it's used, and more. This does a good job at showcasing the fact that historically, yellow face has not been taken as seriously as other racist acts in the media. In fact, yellow face was extremely normalized and was often used to portray Asian characters, especially during the exlcusion era when there was a shortage of actual Asian actors. When compared to My Geisha, this makes sense, as the movie is able to make a joke out of yellow face the entire time without focusing on any other implications of blatant racism.
FU MANCHU AND LU CHUNG ARE PLAYED BY WHITE PEOPLE!!! They are super harmful and stereotypical representations!
