Alphabet Agencies
Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)
it was focused on meeting the needs of the poor. A total sum of $500 million was focused on soup kitchens, blankets, employment schemes and nursery schools
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
This was aimed at unemployed young men in particular. They could sign on periods of 6 months where they couldn't find work, these would be reviewed after the 6 months if no work is found. The money gained was put towards supporting the young men and their families
Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA)
This forced the farming industry to reduce their production so the prices would slowly increase as the resources became less abundant. Additionally, the AAA helped conserve the soil and in certain cases of extreme hardship, they would help farmers with their mortgages.
National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA)
This set up 2 alphabet agencies
Public Works Administration (PWA)
This used government money to build schools, roads, dams, bridges and airports. These would be vital once the USA had recovered to its normal state, this also created millions of jobs.
Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC)
This took over the mortgages of middle-income Americans who couldn't afford to pay their mortgages. HOLC took over around 1 million mortgages so the banks wouldn't repossess their homes. 80% of these mortgages successfully repaid the HOLC mortgage
Social Security Act (SSA)
This provided state pensions for the elderly and widows. It also allowed state governments to work with the federal government to give help for the sick and disabled. Most importantly, this set up unemployment insurance.
Works Progress Administration (WPA)
This brought together all of the organisations whose aim was to create jobs. This extended work beyond building projects as it made jobs for office workers and even unemployed actors, artists and photographers.
Fireside Chats
What were they?
Fireside Chats were radio broadcasted conversations that Franklin D. Roosevelt organised so the people would feel closer to him and therefore trust him more.
Was this effective?
Yes. It gained many peoples trust and faith in his chats. It also allowed for people to hear his plans for the new deal before they went into action so that they could feel included in the decisions of the country
Banking Acts
What were they?
The initial banking act closed down all of the banks for an inspection so they knew whether or not they were fit to keep open or if they should be closed down. This included stopping banks from making potentially risky investments and ensuring that peoples money would be safe and backed up by government funds.
Was this effective?
Yes. It gained peoples trust in the banking systems and made people feel like they could rely on the banks and ensured peoples money was safe.
