We never use "that" in non-defining relative clauses
Example: Mr Smith, who works with me, has invited me to a party
Relative pronouns
The relative pronoun of a non-defining clause can NEVER be omitted :
Preposition
Formal
I get on well with the people whom I work.
Informal
I get on well with people that I work with.
You can use which, that, whom, who.
Who and that aren't used after prepositions.
Pronoun
I know a girl whose dad got arrested yesterday.
can be omitted when it is the object of a clause
Example: The costumer who I called was very happy.
They identify a noun more clearly.
The man is my brother. The man who is standing is my brother.
