A 5-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
NOTE, START HERE AND WORK CLOCKWISE: Repeat this process annually. When full time OHS work is started and clarity is gained, make this a defined tabular process. I am most interested in becoming a Safe Design expert or consultant. At the 5 year mark determine whether a specialist or management role is to be sought.

Transition into OHS at current workplace or find a suitable employer to gain mentorship. Gain a feel for future direction through work experience.
Create a LinkedIn profile and network.
Take time to enjoy life, re-connect with family and friends again to re-energise.
Join the Australian Institute of Health and Safety (AIHS).
Read all stories in Set Phasers on Stun, just because it is a good book.
SKILL 1: HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND RISK ASSESSMENT

Compile JHA task base risk assessment templates for efficient future usage.
Gain more work experience in chemical risk assessments.
Hone plant risk assessment skills through experience.
Gain more experience applying Ishikawa and Bowtie analysis.
Take a lead role in updating the Critical Risk Standards at work. I played a significant role in the past and it was a great experience.
Read Derek Viner Occupational Risk Control Predicting and Preventing the Unwanted textbook.
Read about Bowtie analysis, get a comprehensive knowledge
Seek a good mentor for guidance on the the prioritization of critical risks.
Knowledge of exposure standards and their application: Compile commonly used standards from Standards Australia
Hazard-specific legislation and standards: Compile COP’s and Standards used during work projects
Criteria and processes for monitoring and validating critical controls: Seek Mentorship within OHS in an organization.

Check in and objectively determine if expert status has been reached, if not address gaps.

Complete a safety inspection at work with members of the HSE Committee
Prioritization of critical risk: Mentorship, work within OHS in an organization
Become an expert at hazard identification and advanced risk assessment. Use existing engineering and qualify assurance transferable skills to develop higher level effective controls.
SKILL 2: SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (SMS) CREATION / LEGAL COMPLIANCE

Do a Cert 4 in Training and Assessing course.
Be involved in the creation of an SMS.
Be involved in the audit of a work SMS.
Complete the AIHS contractor management course as a CPD exercise.
Read Eric Hollnagel Safety 2 in Practice Textbook
Read OHS Bok 9.2 Work Health and Safety Law in Australia. It did not exist when I did the OHS Law unit.
Read OHS Bok 12.2 OHS Management Systems. It did not exist when I did the Safety Systems unit.
Use transferable Design and Quality Assurance skills to fullfill the HSE(Q) aspect of OHS.
Professional ethics and codes of conduct: Fully read and complete OHS Bok CH 38.3 Ethics and Professional Practice, it is a large chapter.

Look into and consider the requirements to become a government workplace inspector.
Read the Australian harmonised Model WHS ACT and Regulation through periodic reading. This is a big task so read a few pages every week. I did a legislation comparison for my placement. You don't remember every clause but you quickly gain a good overview and know where to look in future. This would be priceless mind map knowledge.

SMS development and legislation are interest areas that I wish to develop to potentially become a specialist consultant.

Read Science Direct Safe Design journal articles
Re-read OHS Bok Control chapters 34.1 to 36 again. Highlight and take elaborate notes now that I know that Safe Design is the area of OHS that I am most passionate about and able to utilise my transferable Design skill set.
Read any specific Codes of Practice or Standards noted in the Bok
Build major hazard facilities knowledge Safety Case abilities from Ptd resources gathered.
Read OHS Bok 17.4 Process Hazards (Chemical) and chapter 13 Managing Process Safety.
Learn Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) quantitative
risk assessment. Use university materials from the Prevention Through Design (PtD) unit. This is the Fault Tree handbook from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Learn Hazards and Operability Study (HAZOP) for
qualitative risk assessment. Use PtD resources.
Learn Event Analysis (EA) mitigation
control strategy. Use PtD resources.
Read Safe Design resources gathered during PtD and placement.
Learn Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) from PtD resources gathered.

Consider Risk Engineering as a career path.
Develop an emergency management plan
Write a Safety Case.

At work consult with regional Engineering team to engage OEM and fix the work screen testing motor tower that is out of operation due to my risk assessment. I have a solution, it just takes time and communication.
Becoming a Safe Design expert is the most clear direction forward for me. I love reading, so these development items cover both bases.
SKILL 4: CORPORATE COMMUNICATION / REPORT WRITING SKILLS

Excel training course required. This is for a more comprehensive knowledge of how to compile statistics and create effective graphs for safety reports.
Attend at least two OHS conferences.
Write a monthly OHS report for work
Do Microsoft Word training course for advanced features so that I can be more efficient at formatting and editing and not be so reliant on the templates in my resources library.
Start watching some of the Golden Key webinars that I have never had time for while completing Uni and working full time...

Watch Youtube videos for the more advanced Powerpoint, Word and Excel features.
I love writing. Reports are one of the most effective mediums for my writing style. Develop academic writing and report writing skills.
SKILL 5: CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

Complete a training course for business budgeting.
Take an influencing others training course. This could be an AIHS CPD component.
Complete a project management course

Complete CPD development requirements at AIHS. Become a certified Generalist OHS Professional.
Start a Graduate Diploma or Masters Degree in chosen specialty field.
If a management role is considered, investigate how to learn how to create a business case. This could be a course or CPD exercise.
Complete reading of the entire OHS Bok. Weekend periodic reading sitting on the deck with a coffee. This as actually my idea of fun!

Find a suitable job and mentor in a safety manager position for exposure of the requirements.
I am unsure if I would want to become a general manager, my personality type is more in line with being a specialist. Keep these development items in mind if the management path is pursued.
The vision for becoming an OHS professional is to have a good cause to be passionate about for the rest of my working life and beyond. Not just safety, but the health and wellbeing of people, care for the environment and sustainability for humanity. I do not want people to have a work injury like I have had or be exposed to unnecessary psychosocial stress. I also like education as I love reading, learning and meeting more open minded and informed people along the way.
