Psychological factors
Their relationship with the song. If the participant associated the song with a bad memory they may be inclined to skip the song or avoid it based on that association.
The listeners mood will effect how they listen to music, as for example if they are really upset they may be inclined to listen to some sad music.
Suspectibility of mood swings
The participant's attention span. If the participant doesn't have a very long attention span they might get bored very quickly in the song and skip it and listen to another song or be indecisive with their music.
Research design types:
Experimental
Advantages:
Easy to manipulate.
Gives the researchers a lot of control in the experiment.
Because the people in charge of the experiment, the actual experiment is often made in artificial environments or very controlled, so data could not be as good as it could possibly be.
Observational
Data could be potentially bias.
It could be time consuming.
Easy to manipulate.
Qualitative
Since the experiments are done in an artificial environment, the participants may present different information then compared to being in a normal environment.
It's a more flexible approach.
It focuses on the data given.
Quantitative
Relatively easy to analyse
The data may not be strong enough to explain complex issues
Lacks specificity that qualitative data can provide
Independent variable
Music
Potential problems
Potential variables:
Some peoples heart rate may not go when listening to some music compared to others, for example normally participants heart rate would go up whilst listening to heavy metal, but a participant who regularly listens to heavy metal their heart rate may not go up as being used to that type of music.
Might have heart problems or issues
Factors
Quality of the headphones
The type of music
Beats per minute in the song (BPM)
Music frequency
Music lyrics
Music volume
Sample size
Potential problems:
Hard to measure
86 participants
Limited participatns
It's just based off of students, so results could be based
Safety and precautions
The volume of the music
The music lyriccs
The frequency of the music
Cultural considerations
Ethical considerations
Making sure the music is safe and appropriate for the participants to listen to
Making sure the participants give consent before doing the experiment
