INSECTS
Natural Science
Characteristics of insects (south africa.2002;52)
They usually have a three-parted body.
They do not have a backbone.
Some of them have wings.
Learning why they are the only invertebrates that are able to fly. According to (study.com.2021)
Class Activity
Building an insect model. According to Unlucay.2017 The activity allows for the children to be able to learn the different body parts of the insects. Create their own insect picture book. This allows for children to remember the different insects which aids with memory retention.
Life cycle of insects( south africa.2002;52)
Learning the life cycle of insects. This aids in the understanding of genetics. Learning life cycles of insects such as bees to tie into social science.
Class Activity
Creating an insect life cycle. Aids in helping learners remember the life cycle of the specific insect they are learning.
Social Science
Places where helper insects are found
Studying where insects such as bees are found. Learning about how the climate affects how bees are able work. Learning about climate change and how it destroys bee habitats and aids in declining population of species such as honeybees. according to (EcroTek,2021)
Class activity
Finding out what kind of bee species are native to the area of the school.
Drawing a map of where to find beehives on the school premesis.
Conservation of insect habitats
Learning how to protect and look after insects around and in the school and their houses. Learning practices like less littering to reduce pollution, teach learners about the importance of making sure the soil at their homes and school is healthy by teaching them about throwing vegetable peels etc. on the soil to turn into compost. This can turn into a lesson about the passing of time and it can turn into a science experiment.
Class activity
Starting a small compost area where there are many insects. To teach children about the impact of a healthy environment and why pollution and global warming is so detrimental.
Drawing posters to promote conservation.
Learning about the history of the insects found in the area
Teaching the learners about the history of the bee species as well as any other insect found in the area. How many populations and species of a specific are found in the area .
Class activity
Researching the insects found closest to their homes and cutting and pasting pictures of it in on poster paper to present to the class
Technology
How to protect insects
Learning about the natural structure's insects build to protect themselves from danger and to survive.
Class activity
Having children build their own structures they think a specific insect will be safe in.
Insect habitats
Teaching learners about the insect habitats and kingdoms. Showing them videos of how they build structures can specifically focus on bees. Teach the learners about how honey is made this can tie in with natural science and geography.
Class activity
Have learners build their version of bee hives as well as how they think bee hives should have been built by the insects.
