Definition:
an insect is a type of animal that is small and has certain characteristics. (Cambridge dictionary, 2023.)
Activity:
I would have different toy insects. Butterfly, ant, caterpillar, fly and a few others. Then the activity will be done with the whole class where they need to decide which insects they would classify together based on different factors. E.G: putting the insects with wings together.
Social Science:
How insects harm us:
Insects will only inflict harm when they feel threatened. (NC State, n.d.)
Some insects can sting or bite. (NC State, n.d.)
How insects help us:
Pollination- some insects, like butterflies will carry pollen on their legs and transfer it from flower to flower. (Smithsonian, n.d.)
Some insects create food we eat. Bees will make honey. (Smithsonian, n.d.)

Activity:
I would create a lesson surrounding the life cycle of a butterfly. First the learners will draw the different stages. I will slowly instruct them as to what they will need to draw and will draw it as well so they can see. They will then stick their drawings on a circle piece of paper, which has arrows on it.

Learners will build an ant using recycled material such as, egg cartons for the body and paper straws for the legs.
How insects eat:
Some insects, like caterpillars, they will chew their food. (PNC, n.d.)
Insects like butterflies don't have teeth and will use a straw-like feature, to drink their food. (PNC, n.d.)
