Alternative fuel - Dimethyl Ether (DME)
What is alternative fuel?
Alternative fuels are fuels that come from sources other than petroleum. Most are produced domestically. And some come from renewable sources. They produce less pollution than gasoline or diesel.
History of DME
DME is used as an alternative fuel in trucks and buses in early 2000s
In recent years, DME is used in many things like power generating and heating
After world war 2 DME is used as a propellant in spray products
DME was first synthesized in the mid-19th centur
Pros and Cons of DME
Pros
DME combustion produces significantly less Nitrogen Oxide emissions compared to diesel fuel.
DME is a gas at normal conditions but becomes a liquid under moderate pressure(easy to transport)
DME is biodegradable(good for environment)
Cons
DME is dangerous if a person is exposed to high contrations of DME vapor
DME gives lower energy compared to gasoline and diesel
DME is very flammable and could cause an explosion
Applications of DME
DME can be mixed with LPG to improve its quality
DME is used in deodorants, hair sprays, insect repellents and more
DME can be used as a fuel in fuel cells to generate electricity.
DME is used to produce plastic and process metal
