Media & Music (similarities)
MUSIC
Why sensitive individuals are exceptional as a musician? (Research Question)
Since music is subjective and it lies heavier on the innovative or creative side, there are no specific rules that have to be abided. Musicians can be known as poignant, sensitive, emotional; which is why they excel in this field (Scott Barry Kauman and Carolyn Gregoire, 2015).When music is composed and produced out to the public, we may have a propensity to somehow relate to it. The reason being, music is never composed or written without emotions. Songs have been proven to calm the nerves of the human body, assisting to improve focus during studying. (Jakob Christensen, 20 April 2023) Different types of genres of music can correlate our current mood, bringing many different emotions for us to undergo. (Raymond Leone, 25 August 2023)
Not guaranteed of success being in the music industry (issue)
There are many artists in this industry which makes it a tough job to choose. Music itself is subjective so there are no rules when it comes to creating your own songs. The issue being, if people enjoy what you’re making or not. There are many songwriters, singers and musicians out there who aren’t stated as ‘famous’. The way these artists earn money is through consumers of their products. This is why you see them sell their albums, concert tickets. Back then, singers did not have as much access globally to share their work. But a positive note for artists back then is the lack of competition between other artists; so they were known exclusive and iconic (examples include: ABBA, The Beatles).
Some benefits of music:
Emotional Response: Music has the ability to evoke a wide range of emotions, from joy and excitement to sadness and nostalgia. Different genres and melodies can trigger different emotional responses, and people often use music to enhance or regulate their emotions.
Mood Enhancement: Listening to uplifting and energetic music can improve a person's mood and increase feelings of happiness and positivity. Music can act as a mood booster and help alleviate stress and anxiety.
Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Slow-tempo, soothing music can promote relaxation and stress reduction. Many people use calming music to create a peaceful environment, whether it's during meditation, yoga, or simply unwinding after a long day.
Perspectives:
Local: The Tielman Brothers is a band consisting of Indonesian - Dutch members. Though they aren’t fully from Surabaya, it is notable that this successful band was formed in Surabaya. They are one of the oldest bands ever known to exist that is from Surabaya. They started off around 1945 and received many attention from the local crowd by the odd way of music they could offer through their performances; even the presidential palace invited them countless times. The Tielman Brothers is an example of how they became successful in the music industry back then. There were little competitors and the way The Tielman Brothers played their music stood out from others; making them the first ever band known in history to be successful. (Nefri Inge, 22 March 2022)
National: A target audience reached by a famous national singer and songwriter, Tulus. A 21st century hit that every Indonesian person is familar with is Muhammad Tulus. One of the reasons on how he succeeded in the music industry was how his songs were accustomed to the taste of most people nowadays. Since we’re living in the 21st century, we have the media and internet to get introduced by all kinds of artists and their music. Most of the people who listen to music are young adults to adults and something that they have in common nowadays is enjoying love songs. Tulus’ songs are very heartfelt and they bring emotion that may help console us or express our feelings about somebody we care for. (Dian Aprilia, 2021.)
Global: Many factors contribute to determine the success of oneself in the music industry. Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey, Celiné Dion are perfect examples of how global success can look like at its peak. For the other artists all around the world who have yet to be known, there are still many obstacles for them to overcome. Funding for their own music career can be plenty of work if they’re not supported by a record label (not to mention how record labels nowadays demand the finished product rather than signing with people who might have high potential). Spotify is an app often used to listen to songs nowadays, making it easier to access an artist’s song. The downside of this, is how physical music (CDs & Vinyl records) sales start to decline due to the use of spotify. Competition is nowhere near easy in this era, especially if you are still a new, small artist. The music industry is large and it will keep on growing, so trying to stand out in this industry will definitely not be an easy job for rookies. (Brian Clark, 9 February 2022)
MEDIA
What is the media? (research question)
The ‘media’, also known as the internet, is the main means of communication. It can be from broadcasting, publishing, newspapers, television, magazines and etcetera. A lot of people use the internet/media to communicate with other people like their loved ones. The media is everywhere.
Yes. The reason for this is because sometimes, the media is the key to success. The media helps us improve our talents and teaches us how to be better. The media also helps us learn new things such as new skills, new culture, new talents, new life hacks and etcetera. But of course, we also need to learn how to not get addicted to it. While the media has a lot of benefits for it like how the media is a source of learning like what I mentioned above. It’s also a tool for communication, it helps us communicate with other people like your loved ones, your friends or even strangers. The media provides us entertainment, take tiktok, youtube, instagram or other famous apps as an example. Not to mention, the media increases our job opportunities. Unlike newspapers, we can easily track which company, business, or restaurant needs help. We can get their phone numbers, take an interview, and who knows, maybe you’ll end up getting the job. And if you want to start a business by yourself, you can easily promote it by publishing what your business is all about and how they can buy your items. The media also helps in the healthcare department, we can use google to help us which medicine is good for us and help us identify which disease we have using our symptoms. But if we’re scared, we can also go to the doctor or hospital since Google's answers aren't 100% accurate.

Some examples of how the media can change our lives

Addiction: We will get addicted to the internet through entertainment, this might also cause lack of sleep. Your eyes will be so focused on your screen that the time will pass fast until you don’t realize what time it is.
Boost our mood: You will have the freedom to be able to watch or do whatever you want on the media. Spending time with your loved ones in the media would be nice.
Increases our awareness: The media makes you more aware of what is going on in the world around you and allows you to interact with larger issues. It also allows you to connect to people who are interested in these problems and events too, giving you access to a wider community that you may not have close by.
Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia, is taking advantage of the internet to enhance economic development. The city is taking advantage of the internet’s potential to create new opportunities for businesses, increase access to global markets, and create jobs.
In Indonesia in 2019, 94 million adults were unable to access the Internet on a mobile device and even fewer people had access to fixed broadband internet. Nearly 80 percent of those not connected reside in non-metro rural areas of Sumatera, Java and Bali islands, which are the country’s three most populous islands. On top of that, 60 to 70 percent of Indonesians living in the country’s eastern region are inadequately connected due to variable quality of service. This divide between Indonesia’s digital haves and have-nots reinforces the country’s socio-economic disparities. As the World Bank’s Beyond Unicorn report shows, young adults are ten times more likely to have mobile internet access than senior citizens. Nearly half of Indonesian adults did not own an internet-enabled phone (e.g., smartphone) before the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a fundamental barrier to going online.
One of the internet’s biggest advantages is its ability to connect people all over the world, but that world appears significantly smaller when you realize how unavailable or slow the internet is in many countries other than the United States, Japan, and other world leaders. Many African countries like Chad, Niger, and Somalia have single-digit percentages of their respective populations with internet access, and internet speeds vary wildly from country to country. If we want the fullest possible use and benefit out of the internet, we need to take measures to assure the greatest number of people from countries all over the world have reliable access. Companies like Facebook are trying to solve this problem by beaming internet to remote locations via automatically piloted balloons, but it will be some time before the world is fully connected. It’s a good thing that the internet is as widely available as it is, but that also means it’s available to hackers and cybercriminals and wider access means more potential targets. There’s no way to eliminate cybercrime, as improving technological defenses simply results in more innovative hacking to get around them. However, we can better educate consumers and give them the resources necessary to protect themselves even with simple measures, like choosing stronger passwords.

The negative effects the media can do to us is change our lives for the worse. As you can see, the media is also a source of bullying. A lot of bad people are also on the media, they can use the media against you. The media can make you develop stress, depression and anxiety. By those, I mean about how people can easily bully you for example, being ‘too’ young, losing a parent, having a hard time, acting cold towards other people and many more.
