geography train of thought
Task 1
How people use the plains (describe activities)
Airport
In the plains because it's flat land
Allows people to travel
Farms
Plains are flat and are marshy, thus have good access to water and are fertile land.
Cloverdale Farm
140 hectares, 2 employees, 10 years been owned by the current owners
Mark and Tracy = owners of Cloverdale Farm
Mosgiel (town)
Not actually in the plains, but instead just outside of it.
describe features of plains
(use map)
Natural
Hard if not impossible to detail why natural features are there without describing the way the land first formed.
Cultural
The tairei plains are about 300 square kilometres with a maximum extent of 30 square kilometres
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taieri_Plain
Land easily flooded due to the rivers and lakes in/nearby the plains and the already marshy nature of the plains
Why people use the plains (natural & cultural features)
Farming
Fertile land (due to marsh land making water easy and land good for crops)
Flat land as well as fertile
Task 2
Impacts on people
positive
Economic gain (revenue, export etc)
(short term)
Cloverdale Farm support Fonterra, Fonterra has a thing where they pay more money to sustainable farms called "Cooperative Difference"
Fonterra have a scoring system, Cloverdale Farm is ranked as a 14 which is "very good"
the product produced means more milk to be exported with contributes to the huge amount of revenue not only the government gets as tax, but the farm gets
Economic sustainability
cause and effect in the economy
negative
Noise and smell (there is a lot)
(short/long term)
400 milking cows, 100 yearly replacements, 500 on average cows
The argument is that people are apposed to be near the farms on the Plains due to the rancid smell and constant noise
Possibly impacts the morale of the farmers and/or the animals themselves
If the farmers do not cope with the smell they may begin to feel really bad about working at the farm
The animals themselves may not be able to handle the sound/smell of the other cows
Impacts on enviroment
positive
DOC efforts to keep sustainability
(short/long term)
The DOCs entire job is to conserve the enviroment
DOC works with plenty of people throughout the country on similar issues and after the bill to limit emission from cows
Fonterra is one such partner that is also connected to Cloverdale Farm (whom has a deal with Fonterra about being more sustainable
negative
Water pollution
(long term)
Social/environmental consequences/effects of sustainability
Dairy farming involves animals which leads to waste and since they are near water this can lead to water pollution.
Task 3
Steps to minimize impacts of environment
what is already being done by mark and tracy
Deal with Fonterra to incentivise sustainability

Effluent is sewage that is dispensed into water. Cloverdale Farm does effluent and water management. Meaning they clean their effluent and water and make sure everything is clean.
Riparian planting is planting near water. This is done to slow flood waters. riparian also can involve putting obstacles in the river itself
Cloverdale Farm also manages their stock (cows). They do this by selective breeding and rotating their stock. This helps keep the cows in the best possible health.
fencing the riparian planting means that they do not contribute to water pollution as much as if they didn't fence off their riparian planting.
riparian is not just helpful for the water but other aquatic organisms
an incentive is always a good start
Recycling in an efficient way
recycling can be done by not having effluent dispensed into water
Riparian planting is a good way to keep the rivers from flooding and make sure the environment is kept conserved and preserved.
Stock management is a great way to avoid pollution directly to water and the air.
If the cows are kept away from the water to avoid water pollution and maybe fed something not only better for them but maybe more sustainable to feed them (such as self grown crop)
Fully explain the sustainability (or lack thereof) of the plains
make judgement
14 score from Fonterra, maybe assume its out of either 15 or 20 but based on a myriad of factors
Yes they are sustainable
They may not last forever though as events across the world may impact the sustainability of everyone
Other than that I believe that due to the high regard in which Cloverdale Farm holds sustainability
