Two Popular Approaches:
Sins to forsake
Promises to claim
Examples to follow of avoid
Commands to obey
Stumbling block or hindrance to avoid
Motives (good & bad)
Actions (deeds & speech)
Relationships (with God & people)
Thoughts (positive & negative)
Importance of Application (Zuck, pp.20-25)
a. The nature of the spiritual life (John 13:17; James 1:25; Eph.
4:1)
b. The purpose of the Scriptures - to change men (ii Tim. 3:16,
17; Heb. 4:12-13;)
c. To efficacy of the Scriptures - it is relevant and practical
(Romans 10:17)
Problems with application
A. Generally, the teachings of the epistles more directly apply to us while the teachings of narratives and Old Testament laws more indirectly apply to us via a general principle.
B. Two steps helping one determine the choice (Finale, pp. 103,104)
1. Context (a) the context itself may tell you it is obviously not meant to be applied. (b) The author may himself limit the application by addressing himself to a limited group. (c) An obvious requirement of history and culture may limit the application.
2. Additional Revelation - Subsequent revelation may limit the application of some Scriptures.

*Evaluate the level of specificity of those applications. Are they transferable across time and space to other audiences?
*If they are not directly applicable, identify one or more broader cross cultural principles that the specific elements of the text reflect.
