Natural Science
Different insects
Such as : fly, ant, beetle
And mosquitoe.
Students will observe by recognizing what makes an insect look like and insect. They can identify common features and structures.
Children can explore examples of different insect adaptations and see how they fit into a certain insects lifestyle/habits.
Activity:
Children are put into groups of 5.
Each group will choose and insect and learn more about it in the 'Bug book for kids' that has been provided by the teacher. They will identify it's habitat and adaptations. As a group they will present to the class about their insect.
As a class we will then discuss which insects are similar to another or different and how?

How insects help us
Insects benefit the environment by:
•Pollination, which happens when insects go in search of food.
Children will learn between 2 types of Pollinations:
▪︎ self pollination
▪︎ cross-pollination
Our insects pollinators are the honeybee, butterfly, moths, ants, beetles etc.
Insects benefits Humans by supplying us products like:
Foods, like honey which is produced by bees.
• Silk, which is produced by silk worms and obtained from their cocoon.
•Lac, which is produced through Lac scale insects and is used for polishes.
•Beezwaz, user for candel making.
Activity:
Children are to make a 3d bee using pom poms and pipe cleaners for legs.
A flower will be placed with cheese powder (pollon).
The children are to land their bees on the flower, the powder will stick to the legs and the bee can then fly to another flower that is placed on the other side of the classroom.
Children can see how much pollen in transfered from one flower to another.
How insects harm us
Activity:
Making a Mosquito repellent candle.
In a glass jar, children can cut up lemon slices, add basil sprigs leaves and add lemongrass essential oil to the car.
Top with water and add a small candel that floats above water.
This will keep the Mosquitoes away when it's been lit.
Insects are able to harm Humans and animals as we are a food source to them.
These are mainly our blood sucking insects such as: Mosquitoes, Stable Flys, head lice and bed bugs.
These insects also can spread diseases such as malaria and yellow fever.
Insects can harm us humans and animals if they feel threatened by us. Insects such as wasps can exhibit a defence response to predators. Wasps attack with a sting which leaves the predator in pain.
Technology

Building a Habitat.
Insects love to live on places where they can hide from predator. Children are to go find and discover the places of insects homes. They are to make notes on whether this is a dry or damp area. Etc.
We are to learn where certain insects prefer to live like lady bugs love to live in between pine cones.
As a class the children will split into 2 groups and each group will build a buzzy bug hotel. The group with the best bug hotel will win.
It must attract different insects and include: twigs, pine cones, dry leaves hollow steams etc.
Activity:
Planning of the big hotel must be designed on a A4 page. And show what insects will be living in their hotel.
