SS Chapter 3B : How does citizens work for the good of society?
Role 3: Strengthening sense of belonging
Build common experiences with fellow citizens
Events organised such as National Day Celebrations among the neighbourhood etc, encourages citizens to come together to commemorate this joyous day where Singaporeans appreciate how far SG has come.
Common spaces such as void decks enhances interaction between residents living around the neighbourhood. Through the common events and daily interactions, citizens may find out that some of them have similar interests and encounters in SG, which brings them closer, strengthening the unity in SG.
Sharing feedback with the government
Ways to do it: different representative groups can gather feedback from the citizens about their concerns on specific issues, e.g, housing, food etc.
This enables the government to understand and address the issues the citizens are concerned with.
This creates a sense of belonging among citizens through their similar interests and concerns
Sharing of opinions creates a mutual understanding between the citizens, which further creates a sense of belonging as voices are heard and no one would be neglected.
-example: In SG, house visits or spreading awareness through social media platforms
Role 2: Influencing government decisions
Individual Effort
Give feedback to the government to make changes to policies and develop a stronger sense of belonging
Eg. Reach provides information about government policies more accessibly and allows them to give feedback
Organised Group
Help refine policies and point out areas for improvement. eg. provide reports or dialogue sessions
Eg. food bank reports on food security in SG which collaborated with organisations to help others
