Reptiles

Natural Science

Conditions they live under

Reptiles are cold-blooded and cant control their own body temperature. In order to warm up or cool down, lizards and other reptiles such as snakes, turtles and crocodiles move to different areas of their environment
Food Availability- Reptiles have diverse diets that range from insects and plants to other vertebrates. Their ability to find suitable food sources impacts their growth, reproduction, and overall health.

Technology

Materials used to make their homes/nest

Structures of the reptiles body

Their bodies are made up of scales, either leathery or hard shelled to protect their skin from getting harmed and keep them from losing water.
They bony skeletons support their bodies.

Female snakes lay eggs and may build simple nests in crevices, under rocks, or use leaf litter, while some reptiles such as crocodiles often construct mound nests made of vegetation and soil. The female crocodile builds a mound in a suitable nesting area and lays her eggs in a chamber within the mound.

What are they dependant on ?

Some reptiles depend on other reptiles as part of their food source. For example, snakes are known to prey on reptiles like lizards and smaller snakes. This predator-prey dynamic helps control populations and maintain biodiversity within ecosystems.

How do Reptiles adapt to their surroundings (Adaption)

Camouflage: Many reptiles have evolved coloration and patterns that help them blend into their surroundings, making them less visible to predators and prey.
Warning Coloration: Some reptiles have bright colors or patterns to warn predators that they are toxic or dangerous.

Different types of Reptiles

Characteristics of Reptiles

Reptiles are a group of cold-blooded animals which have skins covered with hard plates called scales or bony plates
They are vertebrates and they all lay eggs on land.

Snakes- are long limbless reptiles which have scaly skin, short tails and jaws that allow them to eat things much wider than their own narrow bodies.
Lizards- Are reptiles that have scaly skin, long bodies and tails and they have four legs
Turtles, Crocodiles, Birds

Diversity amongst Reptiles

Behavioral Traits:
Reptiles display a variety of behaviors. Some are highly social, while others are solitary. Communication methods, and territorial behaviors can also differ significantly between species.

Natural Science Experimenting Activity

Snake Egg Experiment- We would add vinegar to a cup with a raw egg inside so that the vinegar eats away the shell and makes it disintegrate. This will results in the egg being soft and rubbery and I would ask the learners to describe what it looks like and feels and then tell them that's how eggs layed by snakes lok.

Technology Activity

I would make my learner to color in a printed picture of a lizard and then decorate it. They could decorate it by sticking
pieces of paper on top of it to make it look like its their skin and also add add glitter so they could get an idea of how lizards skins feel and look like.

Social Science Activity

I would provide the students with colored paper, crayons, and glue. I would then ask each student to choose a reptile and a habitat and then create a simple collage by pasting the reptile picture onto the habitat picture.
