Learning to live together
(Roles of teacher)
Not streaming -
Mixing students from multiple background/social class
Help to avoid biasness
Respecting students' cultures & religions - Allowing students from other religions to pray based on their religions
Teacher shouldn't mock or downgrade the students if they have different beliefs among the students or even between the teacher
Cooperative learning - Teachers design lessons and activities that promote collaborative learning.
Group projects, peer teaching, and cooperative problem-solving tasks encourage students to work together and share their knowledge, skills, and perspectives.
Encouraging empathy - Teachers foster empathy by encouraging students to understand and appreciate each other's feelings and experiences.
They may use literature, discussions, or real-world examples to help students develop a broader perspective and connect emotionally with their peers.
Emotional support - A teacher's emotional support can significantly impact the classroom atmosphere. When students feel safe, supported, and valued, they are more likely to engage in positive interactions and contribute to a cooperative environment.
Steps to produce united citizens
Unity through mastering the National Language
The English language may still be the international lingua franca for doing business in Malaysia, but the only way to real racial unity among the masses is through mastering Bahasa Malaysia, the national language.
example: Indonesia, all races are able to speak indonesian fluently
Unity through sports
When Malaysian cheer groups support our athletes at stadiums, ethnicity of athletes isn’t an issue. That’s the beauty of sports as an unifying factor.
Badminton, football, squash, swimming
Unite citizens through law
Federal Constitution - supreme law of Malaysia
e.g. Article 3 of Federal Constitution stated Islam as the religion of the Federation
No one is above the law, and the society must be governed by law and that all must be equally subject to the law, and to law only
Unity through festivals
Culture of Open Houses where we visit each other is encouraged to bring a true message of unity and hope
For example: Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Christmas and Deepavali.
Malaysians can unite together and forget all differences that can lead to racial and religious conflicts.
Unity through Leadership by Example
Political leaders can keep peace and harmony by not making seditious remarks against another race.
Stiff action should be taken against anyone who incite racial hatred at public rallies. Eg. by invoking the recently introduced Peaceful Assembly Act.
Use the Sedition Act appropriately to probe any leader that incite words that can cause disunity.
