What are the five reasons : : to use a science notebook?
Reason 1. Notebooks are thinking tools
These tools help every student construct his/her conceptual understandings
Example: Students at Miller elementary more closely engaged with a lesson on snails- using their interactive notebook to chart more in-depth questions than were shared in a whole class discussion
Reason 2. Notebooks guide teacher instruction
Notebooks give teachers access to student's thinking including what they do/do not understand and what misconceptions they may have
Notebooks allow for the inclusion of more visual aids for instruction such as charts, tables and diagrams
Reason 3. Notebooks enhance literacy skills
Students have the opportunity to use more expository types of writing (procedural writing, descriptive writing and labeling)
Notebooks serve as writing practice for students
Allows students to more clearly articulate their ideas in the form of both written text and visual diagrams
Noteboks offer opportunities to enhance students'communication skills: written, visual and oral
Reason 4. Notebooks support differentiated learning
Notebooks are helpful for identifying and supporting the needs of diverse learners within a single classroom
Students can work at their level of ZPD
Teachers are able to provide struggling writers individualized feedback right on their notebook pages (sticky notes) which can help students improve their labeling and expository writing
Students who have poor writing skills can use visuals and observational data to demonstrate their learning and any misconceptions
To challenge higher performing students, teachers can offer more individualized and challenging feedback/questions in a unique way by engaging with students' notebooks
English Language Learners can use diagrams and even offer explanations in their native language to demonstrate learning
For teachers, the notebook provides a window into students' thinking
Allos for formative assessments
Reason 5. Notebooks foster teacher collaboration
Notebooks allow for multiple teachers to compare data and build on each other's successes
Teachers are able to build a wider repertoire as they work together to implement notebooks and figure out best practices
Teachers feel supported to try new ways of thinking
Coordinated efforts and working toward shared, agreed upon goals are a good way to show teachers they are valued and bring the school community together
